What size tyre you going to run?
I run calmini 5.14 gears with 31x10.5 and love the gearing. Sometimes i'd like low range a little lower but that's outweighed by the spot on high range ratio. Lots of guys with 31's run 6.5's.
I can't comment on low range gears, but LOTS of people run them so i'd have no hesitation buying them myself. Go with whichever is cheaper.

You will likely find snake racing stuff is just marked up low range and calmini products anyway

I am running 31's thanks for all the advice guys much appreciated main reason I was going down the 5.1 track is the bigger reduction in high range, as I do alot of beach work and that level or reduction in high range be good. Then when I want to go slow over rocks etc I know I have a good reduction for that..

To be honest, on sand, mine needs lower high range gearing to overcome the width of the 31's... you might find 6.5's high range reduction better for driving sand!

True about the reduction difference, however I still want usable low range with some speed in it, I know 6.5s are awesome however I still like the idea of the ability to carry momentem if I need to bounce over things, that's just me though

That's what high range is for though.
I can easily take off in 3rd gear low. In 5th low with 5.14's i can happily do 50km/hr... that's MORE than enough to bounce over something =) lol
I'd think that 5th with 6.5's you might be doing 45km/hr for the same RPM?

I like being able to put it in 5th at the base of a dune drop the clutch and hold it all the way to the top. With 5.14s i found i was always wanting lower even on the beach or having to shift gears at the worst time. The 6.5s are good if you ever go to a 32" tyre as well as being alot better on the rocks than other gearsets, plus your clutch will love you

I don't use 5th low in a manual. I also try and avoid exceeding peak torque in low 4th.
Think about the speed your jackshaft and input is spinning. Also consider that 5th gear is tiny.

Only issue ive ever had has been super hard shifting and clutch dumps on high traction surfaces as to be expected. Ive found selecting a gear and rpm and holding it without much fluctuation the key to longevity as well as using sealed jap bearings. I think i was over 100k kms in both the sets ive owned with more offroading than most would see.

Yeah i seldom use 5th low - it's more used when driving between sections (ie: very short bursts) when it's not worth stopping and changing to high range.
I'd say in low range in mine, 1st gear gets used 80% of the time, with the odd snatching of 2nd gear. 2nd, 3rd and 4th, are used to drive to the next "bit".

I have 6.5's when I'm wheeling 2nd gets the most attention. 1st can be too low sometimes, but 2nd is just nice a lot of the time.
