After removing the vacuum hubs the splined axle that is viewed has axial play. Both sides are about the same. Is this normal? I can't find any limits in the service manual and I have never replaced my wheel bearings before, should I? With the wheel on and car jacked I can't feel any play.

To get the front wheel bearings off requires a special tool (please - don't use a punch & hammer to 'undo' it) & lots of leverage, as the locking ring is (or should be) done up bloody tight. If there is no play (there is no adjustment of pre-load or anything), no noise & no 'lumpiness' to the tyre rotation, then there is no indication to change them. Rgs, Michael
