Hi everyone i seem to be keeping all of you busy with my simple questions. I just put a speedo cable in my LJ81 for the first time and the needle is bouncing around sometimes upwards of 20kmh. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but my son used to play around with the needle and spin it. if anyone has a way to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Gus
In many cases a bouncing needle is caused by a defective cable, but, if a kid has been playing with the speedometer head the likely hood of damage is extremely high - use a power drill to spin the cable input to the speedometer and see if the bouncing is still present.
How it works is the cable spins a magnet that sits very close to a circular disk, the resulting moving magnetic field causes the disk to move or follow the magnet as far as a clock spring will permit, if the disk gets bent so that it touches the moving magnet you'll get that bouncing - you can try straightening it, but, it's going to be a very fiddly job, and I don't think your chances of success are very high.
make sure there are no sharp bends in the cable from the transfer to the speedo.
