Something I'd never noticed before (coz I never looked...) is that the engine in my LJ50 seems to be sitting about 2 inches forward of the engine mounts. The whole thing appears to be only held in place by the 2 gearbox mounts.
I was checking this out because most times after a very short drive around my farm, the shifter gets stuck and I have to crank the living sh*t out of it to get it unstuck to be able to change gears again. Almost as if I'm moving the gearbox back into place. Usually it requires most of my body weight to move....
Another thing I noticed was that my shifter is the LJ80 style and not the LJ50 style. Could it have an LJ80 gearbox? Would that cause the engine to sit forward?
No idea what your issue is because the LJ50 and LJ80 have exactly the same gearbox shifter setup. They are interchangeable, and you use an LJ80 gearbox to fit an "F" series engine (F5A, F6A Turbo, F8A, F10A) to an LJ50 because they are the same except bellhousing.
Cheers for the replies guys. I had a better look during the week and can definitely say that the gearbox has been replaced at some point with one that has a different bellhousing. There's a clear stud doing nothing on the driver's side of the engine...
Maybe at some point in time the driveshaft between gearbox and transfer case was replaced with a slightly longer one? I can't imagine why though. Doesn't seem to make much sense.
I do need to try to move it back into place coz on top of the "getting stuck" issue I mentioned, it's pretty hard to select 1st and 3rd. Not to mention the engine isn't bolted to anything besides the gearbox!
