hi everyone

i've been thinking of getting a welded centre and was wondering if
it would make a difference on the beach?
and does it effect steering greatly?

thanks max

You shouldn't need lockers for the beach in a Sierra and a permanently locked front will suck in the sand I reckon, sand is one place where I value quick light steering. If you're not locked rear then I suggest doing that first.

Locked rear in sand is awesome. Twin locked with a welded front in sand sucks.

Coily's have different size/length axles. You can't run off the shelf chromos.

Rear diff will hold up fine with a welded/spool carrier

Welded rear is fine, but welded front is ghey (could suit the car well).

A welded front will suck on the sand and require chromo cv's and axles in a sierra. A welded rear will be fine.

On the road it will suck on low speed corners and car parks with a welded rear, but thats what you get for being a cheap skate. Spend a bit more on an auto locker and it won't be so bad on road.

The only option for a front lokka in a coily is welded... I can't imagine you busting axles and cv's in the sand

Not sure what fit's a coily rear (that sounds so ghey), but Rusho should be able to enlighten us with his wisdom.

Wisdom....  AFAIK the rear coily diff accepts everything that a leafy does. I will also add that your axels and cv's SHOULD be ok in the sand as long as you don't drive like a knob head.

But locked on the sand heavy steering will still make it a pain in the arse I reckon, key to sand driving is momentum and that's hard to keep up whilst turning and avoiding obstacles etc with a locked front.

Welded front diffs suck immensely under all conditions.
Auto lockers suck a little bit in the rear. Spartan seem OK?

4wd systems lokka brand is what I went with when I bought one cause they have a decent warranty and still cheap.

I barely know my Spartan is there and it has been faultless.

As another opinion I think welded front on the sand is no worse then a welded front on any other surface. I've done a dozen beach trips now with mine welded and I have no issues with steering. Really it only badly affects steering when your barely moving, but even that isn't as heavy as when on dirt or most other 4WD surfaces. I'll also mention that I haven't snapped any cvs or axles yet, and its wrong to assume a welded front diff will result in snapping them every other trip out. Your driving style and what you drive will have the most effect on that.

X2.

I ran welded both ends in my Sierra for around 10 years.
Was fine.
But after lucking out on a cheap lock rite for the front, I was much happier.
Welded rear stayed for life of the Sierra.
