Hi guys

I am about to order a set of transfer gears from LROR, I plan to run 31's and can't see myself running any bigger for the foreseeable future. The Calmini 5.14 gears look spot on for 31's after playing with a gear calculator. I think I would find 6.5's to be too low with just 31's.

I own a press which was given to me for my birthday. Is there anything that is recommended to install the gears? Also should I order new shims for the case or do most people recycle the factory ones? If I order some how many of each thickness should I get from Low Range.

I am going to buy a set of the BenT transfer case arm mounts also. Is there anything else I should look at doing as part of the install or 5.14 gears, BenT transfer arms, and a properly shimmed case a good setup?

Cheers.

Depends what car you have.
I reckon if you have a WT (3.7:1) on 31's and don't do heaps of highway driving then 6.5's are fine.

Mine is a WT with 3.7 diffs. Either the 18.3% or 20% reduction in high range is fine for the 31's. I would have thought the 6.5's would be better for dry stuff like rocks and high grip surfaces and the 5.14's better for mud etc as I am in Vic. I want to do a trip to Little Desert and maybe even Fraser Island at some stage would 6.5's be ok for sand driving? I'm not fussed about the price difference as I may be better off spending the extra $130 on the calmini gears to get something that is better suited to what ill drive.

Regarding install what do people do about shims? the Trail gear install guide does not mention anything. Does everyone reuse the ones already there provided the case was fine when it was pulled apart i.e. no noise/clunk etc?

Shim it, it's not hard. Some people don't bother since its not mentioned in the TG install guide, it should be done though.

Do you have a copy of the fsm? It shows you how to do it properly.

Buy new, you won't know what you need though until you measure your t/case.

Yes I have a copy of the fsm. Would 2 of each size shim be plenty?

It should be, but can't guarantee that. I just bought mine locally once I had measured the case.
