Hi Guys, Just put a G16B in my vit and had to replace the dizzy o-ring. But stupid me didn't take any notice of where the rotor was pointing when i took off the diffy......... i have no worries pulling things off and replacing them but when it comes to anythin g timing related i am lost. should i just keep taking off the dizzy and adjusting the rotor till its all good? or is there an easier way to work it out. and yes, I have read many things saying about top dead centre and go from there but around in a language i can understand (i'm not the sharpest tool in the shed lol) any help would be great. also piston order is 1-4-3-2 from memory? but how are the pistons arranged. eg: from front to back = 1-2-3-4 or it isn't that straight forward? |

firin order is 1-3-4-2 and they are numbered number 1 piston at the fanbelt end and number 4 piston at the transmission end |

wind the motor by hand till number 1 reaches the top of the compression stroke. you will know this by putting your thumb on the spark plug whole and air will be trying to escape. once you have done that. trace the number 1 spark plug lead back to the dizzi cap. when you put the dizzi back in the head, the rotar button wants to be pointing at that pin in the cap. that will close to the right timing. but you will still need a timing light to get it great |

Pretty sure timing is done on number 4 not number 1 like many cars. (Not that that matters with above method) Timing mark is on the pulley at front of motor. when that is at o or tdc, rotor button should point at the no 4 lead on dizzy. If its on the exhaust stroke not the compression, it will ne 180 out, and won't run. Just point rotor to opposite if that happens. If rocker cover is off, you can check if its firing stroke, as both valvces be shut. If not use above method |

oh great thanks heaps guys for giving me something easy to read. was planning on getting the timing to "running" then taking it to my mech to fine tune. |

BJ, your experience sounds like a lot of my past ones and, possibly future. Glad you got this sorted with some good advice. Just to save me adding to my existing list, could you spend the time to run me through the tappet cover gasket replacement process. I have a bit of oil on the floor and this looks to be the culprit. Thanks Kev remove air crossover, spark plug leads (can possibly leave spark plugs in) unplug breather on drivers side of cover, and any other plugs, remove cover and old gasket. fit new spark plug seals (optional) fit new gasket, refit cover and reverse the order. make sure nothing has fallen down into the rocker assembly while the cover has been off. shouldnt take more than 30-40 mins (depends on how well you clean up the cover, or decide to paint etc etc) |
