| Post subject: | Pros and cons of diff pumpkin shaving? |
so im planning of shaving my diffs front and rear, my goal for doing this is i dont want to run tyres bigger than 215 75 15 but i still want the ground clearence so im not dragging my diffs around in the ruts. the car will be used for touring, beach use and the occasional off road moderate tracks. im a bit cautious as this will take away the diff oil volume, and wondering will that effect the diff wear and tear wise? i appreciate your feedback as im new at doing these type of mods also i will not be the one doing the work. thanks Doug. |

Pro: Increased ground clearance. Con: Less oil volume... No real drama.. Just change the oil a bit more often. Con: No drain plug.. remove one or two of the bottom bolts to drain oil. |

Con: Diff can warp with welding You'd have to put a LOT of heat into it Con: Diff can leak if not done right True. |

You are only reducing capacity by 15-20% or so. What is the recommended service interval? Increase it by 40% if you are really worried... EG Every 50,000Km down to 30,000Km |

Ive done it on mine i reckon you only lose about 50-100ml or so but i wouldnt worry its really not a lot. Just make sure you have good weld in and outside.i deleted my drain plug but you could easily put one back in. Mine doesnt leak, if your iffy about any weld just grind it out and do it again. Mine is 5mm plate on the bottom and i welded the shit out of it and it didnt warp. All pros no cons! |

IMO For the reason of use: the car will be used for touring, beach use and the occasional off road moderate tracks. Its not worth it. Extreme tracks where maximum clearance is needed, yeah ok. Might be worth the trouble. The jimny rear diff is bigger than the front, including the housing. So any shaving you do to the front, the rear will still be lower etc. Bit to think about. Diff housings, the centres sit on an angle, so work that out, with a centre inside it, and measure away. Remove the centre before cutting |

i wont be the one who is doing the cutting and welding as i am not experienced enough. im still undecided about shaving the diffs but one thing i do know is i am not planning on selling the car for another 4 to 5 years. so who knows what i will be doing with car, but i do know i dont like doing things twice. if i do it, it just makes my car unique when selling in the future |

if you consider that taking 12.5mm off the diff is equivalent to going up 1" tyre size as far as clearance is concerned its a pretty worthwhile mod - but only if you find yourself constantly smacking the diff on things (its often quite easy to avoid hitting the diff by choosing an appropriate line) - but for a comp truck its almost a must i would think. |

Its not really the same as going up in tyre size because that lifts everything, shaving moves about 10 square centimetres of the car up about 2cm. Total waste of time for what you use the car for Dougie. |
