I pulled mine off the backplate and gave them a good going over with a wire brush and penetrating oil - easy while everything is already apart

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-Rear-Brake ... 1e6ad82edb Am just about to purchase these to hopefully try and fix my brake troubles on my 1l NT swb 82 model, now is this all i need to replace as far as rear end goes, there is two cylinder type deals in each drum but only 1 each side that has brake lines too it, the other two do not appear to move and im unsure if they are ment to or not, because the other cylinders are ment to and do not. Sorry for the noob question but my mechanic neighbours is on holidays. Doug. |

From the way you explain the workings of your brakes I highly recommend you take it to someone that knows brakes. Because if you have a go and get it wrong you might not get a second chance to get it right, brakes are kinda important. |

My understanding is fair bit clearer than the way explained above , I am just unsure if the bottom (not sure of correct name but cylinder thingomabobs) need to be replace when rebuilding the brakes. From looking at them it appears they they dont not have any means of moving the clip that holds the pad to them (pretty obvious they have no lines to them) I do notice that there is movment in the clip that holds the pad to inside the cylinder without the hose but i assume this is for when the brakes are on/off and there is movement. Long story short are both wheel cylinder thingomabobs on boths side a replaceable item when recoing/replace the stock brakes. I am buying the above wheel cylinders (ones with the lines) just didnt want to buy one lot and then turnout i have to get another lot of parts and pay postage when i can get all of it in one go if needed for free postage. Also as said above most noob question are shot to my retired mechanic neighbour whos out on holiday atm and when ever something isnt right or need a hand he helps (i sit back and watch). I understand it can be hard to describe some things when you don't know the terminology, I didn't mean to come across as rude, just brakes aren't something you want to take a chance with. But if you've got good mechanical understanding then have a go at them. The thingomabobs are the adjusters. They don't need replacing, but they will usually require disassembly and cleaning to free them up. Just pull apart one side at a time so you can use the other as a reference for where the springs etc go. |

Did come across as rude dont worry takes a fair bit to get me fireing, especially on a forum haha, Need to invest in a workshop manual so i know a few of the part names ect. Right that makes sense then, didnt want to replace some of the bits only to find out i have to trouble shoot and dis and re assembly everything to find out whats going on. Thanks for your help mate |

Yes the rear drums have only 1 hydraulic cylinder on each side and the other is fixed. |

Thanks tony, ill probably give the inside of the adjusters a light rub with some scoth brite as they havent been used in a fair while that should be fine shouldnt it? |
