Long time listener first time caller.... I have a dinged up overheating 2nd and 3rd crunching 86 SJ413 with 30inch maxis mudders (a little over 29) and custom whining diff's. Before you tell me to fix the other problems it will soon become the 3rd vehicle (My 2nd) and I have been given the green light to purchase transfer gears (may sneak in a lockrite) from the better half So my Q is it seems a few are running 6.5 with 31's but apparently its a little low for my app - before anyone says the 4.1's are ideal I wld like room to move up in tyre size eventually and it not like zooks are undergeared to start with. ( also prob stickin with the g13 carb as anything else over in NZ is way overpriced an in my mind not worth it) Input wld be appreciated Thanks |

I'd say either 4.9 or 5.1 would be fine for NZ conditions from what I've seen. Steve. |

the biggest thing to consider with gearing is if you're going to be driving it daily, or driving it to your 4wding destination... if it can't maintain speed going up hills on the highway it'll shit you to tears and you'll want lower gearing to help get you up there. if its a trailer rig, then that's not so much of a concern, and you'd be looking more at the crawl speeds of 1st and 2nd low, as well as the wheel speed when 2nd is doing around 3500-4000rpm (ie: comfortably driving up a muddy hill)... last thing you want is to be overgeared and not make it up a muddy hill cos you gotta keep changing gears all the time, nor do you want to be undergeared and find yourself riding the clutch all the time! IMO - 5.14 tcase and 31's on NT diffs with a 1.3 is a good combo. 6.5s would likely be a better choice if you were to go 33s though as they give an extra 30% or so low range reduction (hardly any high range reduction over 5.14 though) - but of course that's only of any benefit if you crawl up things now and then. If you're a foot to the floor driver then the 5.14 would still be a better choice. |

Thanks for the feedback, def be spring under reg n wof. More I cant afford to fix it, than foot to the floor for sure. Its easier to get gears now and then explain that the box is crunching/ the 1.3 drinks as much oil as a 2stroke/ my tyres are a little worn etc and then thats just running costs.... |
