Just hoping someone would be able to help out with information about the legalities of cutting the sills of my vitara... The previous owner has done a fair bit of damage to them and so I would like to cut them out and just install rock sliders up against the cut.

I'm in QLD and lately I have been pulled over a few times for inspections and I don't wanna get defected for the chop so any info would be awesome

I cannot imagine the police will look favourably on you cutting out bits of your car, especially bits you can see from the outside!

 not sure if you're serious or not....

plenty of people running around with chopped sills & wheel arches (virtual lift)

i call it rust repairs.

cant see any reason why cops would care as long as its done safely and neatly

isnt the sill part of the bodys structure? welding in rhs is okay, but cutting sills off and then making chassis mounted sliders that butt up doesnt sound good. someone correct me if im wrong because i was going to do the same till i thought about it

So I rang the department of transport and have been informed that I am not able to either weld rhs directly into the sills or butt sliders against it. I am not legally allowed to cut the sills out at all, as it is no longer compliant with ADR's.

I was informed that welding in the rhs would prevent the car from crumpling where necessary and to be approved it would have to be crash tested. Pretty stupid if you ask me... I'm trying to make my car look better and prevent further damage from occurring.

It's entirely up to you but I think a tidy job of fitting RHS won't be a problem at roadside RBT's. If its done neatly and painted etc it's not really noticable

Crash test your new sill's... hmmmmm. As prev mentioned if it was called rust repairs and it ended up being a little thicker than panel steel then im sure it would be fine. Really if its a gd job and painted then no-one else will be the wiser.
