Hi guys/girls

Not sure if the questions I have are answered somewhere else, if so please pardon me and point me in the right direction. I am new with 4wd-ing but a fast learner 

I recently bought a new Jimny (the one with the fake scoop) and I am looking in using it as an all-terrain car, camping and doing some off-road, but nothing extreme (yet)

In April I want to do a 8 day trip around Broken hill. (national parks and camping)

so my questions I am struggling with at the moment:

apart from basic gear as 2 Jerry's with petrol, snap strap, shovel, compressor, basic tools and tyre repair kit what spare parts should I carry? or are the basic components in a Jimny fine for a trip like that? the trip to there is on normal roads, over there it will dirt roads and light off road (but remote)

I am also looking into some simple and easy practical modifications, I have only fitted a transfer case protection plate, for the rest the car is standard. I was thinking of DIY diff breathers, a snorkel and sound proofing the car a bit better (sadly I do have to burn K's on the hard stuff to get places) what would you guys recommend?

long term I am thinking of a trailer as it is easier to pack camping gear for 2 people, and I can move the Jerry's out of the car… what are the things to look out for? or could I just use a simple box trailer with the same wheels as my car? I am not interested in an 15k camping trailer, only a trailer to carry some fuel and simple camping gear (150 - 250kg max including fuel).

again sorry if these questions are answered somewhere else, I did some searches but it came up with lots of highly technical stuff or nothing at all.

150 to 250kgs ?? for 2 people?? You must eat some big steaks - but really have you looked into a roof rack for your lighter/bulkier items plus fuel and stuff the rest in the back? Hopefully they are still allowed roof racks.

The Jimny nuts will point you in the right direction with the mods

2 Jerry's with petrol +/- 40kg
2 Jerry with water 40kg
1 "keep the GF happy" tent 25 kg
food for 7-8 days 2kg a day a person = +/- 30kg
2 sleeping bags 2kg
2 sleeping mats 2 kg
kitchen items 5kg
clothing 2 people 10kg
car tools, compressor, spares etc 25kg

that's +/- 180kg and those are just the things i can think of my head, i am sure I am forgetting things.

things add up...

i think i can only get 60kg on the roof, and on top of that, a roof rack is 200+ for the 2 things that are connected to the rails and then a basket is around 300. that seems quite expensive for such a small load?

I have this pod on my roof, it ways 70 Kg and holds a lot more when the car is stationary. its pretty stable despite the extra weight up top, just have to know the limits on angles and be mindful of it.
Im not sure if they make these particular bars anymore. with the space in the back seets for most of your food and whot not you might get away with stashing gerry cans on the roof plus a few oversize items and won't have to worry about buying a trailer and tow bar. 300Kg un-breaked towing capacity isnt a lot after all.

I can see where your coming from but... food + water + tools, in the boot = 100 odd kg's you don't need on the roof / in the trailer


Bet there's still space in the boot for a few (or many) dozen beers...

I am quite interseted on peoples thoughts on this.

I was considering just buying a box trailer, and possibly just putting bigger tyres on the standard wheels to make it a bit higher off the ground (Assuming the tyres fit within the mud guards, if not then id mod the mud guards...). Filled with camping stuff simliar to the list mentioned. (maybe make it more water proof as well, add a "roof" on the box perhaps)

Will this suffice as a trailer good enough to tackle light 4wding? (beaches etc).

yep, i converted a 5x3.5 box trailer to a suzuki sized camper with a roof top tent & suzuki hubs, finished weight came in around 320kgs.

check out the trailer thread in good tech & page 100 of my build thread has a bit of a photo dump of my trailer build.

thanks for the links, that shows what can be done with some work. not sure if i am that good with the tools, but there is only one way in finding out i guess :-)

the main thing i am after for this trip is the spare parts, this being a new car i have no idea whats the things that break easily, I assume water hoses and fan belts?

i can stuff everything in the back for now, i am just not happy with fuel inside the car. at the same time on top of the roof is top heavy and hot. a trailer seems a easy way out. also should make it easier to pack, and you can leave the trailer at a campsite.

it comes with a 12v cig lighter cord to power a fluro light inside, to which i have wired a 12v 240mm fan from a computer case, so its quiet but still pushes a decent ammount of air. the best part is on long trips, this fits 2 camp chairs, a fold down kookaburra camp table, 4 pillows, a doona, fishing rods.
