Hey Everyone,

Just went out at lunch, pulled into drive thru and noticed the vit was idling unusually high all of a sudden - 3 grand with the car out of gear. (Had to yell my order to the box because they couldn't hear me over vit  )
From what I can remember it was idling fine (from cold start to running temp) when i left work. It wasn't until the vit got to running temp that it seemed to stick at the 3 grand mark.
When i first got the vit it had a high idle during warm up (not at running temp) but that got fixed a few months ago and haven't had an idling problem since.

Not really sure where to start with checking to work out how to fix. If anyone can help with where to start it would be much appreciated :)

Dont drive the car again without first checking the coolant level in the radiator (not the overflow) with the engine cold

One of the causes can be low coolant meaning the auto choke doesnt come off, worse still is it might overheat the engine and kill it (the low coolant)

if its ok, then its another problem :)

Thanks Royce, i'll have a look before i leave work.
I only flushed and changed all my coolant 2 weeks ago so i'm not sure if that'd be it. (rechecked level and topped up after it had been running too)
The temp gauge should be showing as cooking if it was overheating wouldn't it? Temp gauge has always seemed accurate (starts cold sits in the middle once warmed up)

nope, temp gauge will only read if its in coolant, if there is no coolant it will read normal while the head is splitting clean up the middle, I know this the hard way

Auto choke flap not opening all the way?
Throttle butterfly partially stuck closed?
Accelerator cable sticking?
Coolant hoses to auto choke blocked?

It's going to be a process of elimination. How confident are you to have a dig yourself?

Revs were high the whole way home then as soon as i pulled into our driveway my revs went back to normal.
If doing the above will show if there's something not right even though revs are back to normal i'll give it a shot.
I've got the service manual so if its easy to understand in there or someones happy to explain i'll give it a go :)
i'm still pretty nooby when it comes to all this engine stuff but i'm keen to learn.

Give it a crack. If you're unsure then take some photos and post them up here. Someone will be able to help

could have just been a bit of crap stuck in the idle jet & it's now sucked through.

Fan yes i don't think its ever off, heater definitely not today! Think the last time it was on was a few weeks ago otherwise not for a few months

i have an odd feeling it doesn't. I might be thinking of something else but are the revs meant to go up when you have the ac on or the steering wheels full lock(power steer)? If thats what i read pretty sure i tried it after seeing that and I don't think the revs went up. i'll check again in the morning though for headlights and fan

headlights and fan will raise the revs (well I am fairly sure they still do on a carby vit)
aircon will and power steer in theory does but its hard to pick
