Doing some research for a mate who wants to run 33s on his sierra (currently has 30s 2" lift and 2" shackles). From what I've seen he definitely needs transfer gears (6.5:1)?? And 5.12 vit diff R&P aswell? Will he need to do a 2" body lift ?
Cheers,
Gideon

He will need 6.5:1 transfer gears but depending on the terrain of choice the NT 3.9 diff gears should be enough.
A bodylift, trimming and bumpstop spacing will be needed, either that or big virtual lift.

Would you even be able to tell the difference going from 3.7 to 3.9 diff gears ? I went from 3.7 to 5.12's and noticed it was easier to drive and easier on the clutch but didnt notice any real seat of the pants difference.
As Want 33s said the gearing all depends on what he wants to drive. I would ditch the shackles do a bodylift and cut/bash where needed.

Terrain will be mainly dirt/mud and rocks.
What's a virtual lift?
Would a RUF help?

A virtual lift is another way of saying cutting the guards. In my opinion this is going to be 100% necessary, even with a body lift and bumpstop spacing.
It shouldn't be necessary to run 5.12 diffs. with 6.5 transfer gears 5.12's would be stupid on road - revving at over 4500rpm @ 100 km/h
RUF sort of will and won't help. If often ads a little lift, which can allow a bit more bumpstop spacing whilst keeping acceptable compression travel, and it will move the axle forward which will help to reduce any firewall work required, but, because the axle is forwards, the tyre will want to get into the back of the headlight.
Also, the increased flex of RUF will result in the compressed wheel tucking up even higher into the guard.
Steve.

Yep ^^^
I personally would want 3.9 over .3.7 with 6.5's on 33's

Having set up 2 leafys on 33's now, I can't see how it can be done without virtual lift and a B/L.... Perhaps SPOA

Cheers guys, I was looking around for spoa info. How hard is it? If spoa is done would body lift be needed?

No, you won't need a BL if its SPOA, but SPOA is very complex and expensive to get right. It's very quick and cheap to get the car sitting on its springs SPOA, the cost and complexity is getting it reliable, steering properly, not trashing springs etc. and then it will likely fall over and the owner will want to put it back to SPUA anyway. Seems to be what happens.
If the SPOA is working properly you'll still need to trim guards unless you want the car insanely tall and with no flex, so you might as well trim a bit more and save yourself all the hassle of SPOA.
It is possible to run 33's with no body lift, but the amount of cutting required normally puts people off.
Steve.

Cheers guys, he actually doesnt have drop shackles atm. But he wants to know whats the best way to get flex. Hes running the ironman 2" kit. I said too remove a leaves and get longer shocks. Drop shackles wont help unless he gets longer shocks correct? Hes got the 2" body lift coming soon!

I have 33s on a sj70 Sagged 3" springs Fat zook shackles Front diff about 70mm forward -25 offset rims 33x10.5 silverstone extremes No body lift No hammering guards No cutting I am still sorting bumpstop spacing but get a reasonable amount of up travel with the headlights stopping the front going higher And the fuel filler tube stopping the rear. Gearing is 6.5s, sierra 5speed and 3.7 diffs. It still pulls 130 kph but has a very healthy GTI motor.

When I say no cutting I mean the guards, still have to cut the bumper support things off

There are heaps of ways to skin this cat. This is hands down the coolest Sierra I wheel with: - They're 33x10.5 BFG KM2's. - 2" lifted EFS rear springs all around, front hangers moved to rear spacing to suit (and NT'd to retain full steering lock), all standard shackles. 50mm bump stop extension - A reasonable sort of virtual lift, which then incorporated tube guard etc. - Drivetrain is a G13bb Jimny motor and a Jimny auto. 4.1 transfer gears, and 4.56 diff gears. If it was my car, 2 things I would consider changing: - it needs stronger rear axle shafts. - Needs more virtual lift and a bit less bumpstop purely for comfort.
