Post subject:  Fuel system for EFI - Sierra?

Hi All,

In the process of converting the Sierra to EFI and need some ideas for fuel system.

* option 1, Vitara tank with pump. (understand it requires new mounts fabbed and a BL as the tank is 120mm taller.)

* option 2, Surge Tank 1000ml with VL fuel pump. (leaning towards this as can get cheap pump and swirlpot) - couple questions: will the stock Sierra pump be able to be utilised as a pickup/pre-pump to feed the surge tank? also best way to wire the new vl EFI pump in?

thanks.

What about option 3- a bolt in coil sierra tank with a vitara pick up/pump?

I wouldn't ever run a lift pump/surge tank setup in a 4wd. There's no need no add the complexity. My stock vitara tank will fuel my car with it completely on its side.

thanks bud, happy to look at other simpler options. i am not a fan of running dual pumps etc either.

The coily tank is a direct bolt in?

Yes. Coil tank with vitara pump/pickup.

All coilers were EFI in Japan so the tanks were setup for it.

Just to clarify for you/other searchers

There is no in-tank pump in any carby sierra/vitara, so there's nothing that can be used as a feed pump to the surge tank - the stock carby sierra/vitara pump is camshaft driven and on the motor.

I suppose if you were thinking really left field you could feed the surge tank from the mechanical pump and then feed an EFI pump off of that, but that's making my head hurt a bit.

from the factory perhaps,

but is there anything stopping you from doing this in a sierra tank?

I've done this in a few carby corolla tanks (same deal, mech fuel pump off the cam) for various engine conversions, and this works like a charm.

use it to feed a surge tank and mount a high pressure pump next to the surge tank.

The corolla setup is almost identical to the coil sierra setup, I guess because in other markets, AE 86's were EFI.

A (leaf) carby sierra tank doesn't have removable piping and the gauge sender flange is very small- too small to fit a pump. There is also no swirl pot in the tank.

hmmm i was not aware the leaf didnt have removable pipes.

I guess the only other option is an external lift pump, i have used on of those "facet" type pumps. (used it on my corolla before i did the interal pump as mentinoed above)

They can be a little noisy though.
