Post subject:  GTI G13B Engine - what can be removed?

HI guys,

a GTI (mk2/3) engine into a Sierra, what can be removed from the engine, I see there is several solenoids / piping connected to the rear of the intake, what are these for can they be blanked off? what about the coolant hoses that run to the intake? anything else of no use that can be stripped?

How about the o2 sensor in the exhaust, is it needed? as the wiring snapped near the bung so I would have to get a new one if its essential.

one last question: timing belt on these motors, is there a guide/stopper that prevents the belt from creeping forward on the cogs? as the engine I have sitting here the front of the belt had moved forward and rubbing on the plastic housing completely chewing it out.

You'll have to work out what those solenoids do before deciding to remove them.
Intake coolant hoses are needed.
O2 sensor isn't absolutely necessary if you can afford the fuel it'll use without it.
Timing cover chew out is normal. Replacement covers are available.

What do you plan to do with the distributor?

Find a mk1 and take everything off and run a couple of side draft webbers

Thanks guys. Dizzy I think I will attempt to notch the firewall for clearance, otherwise I will go the modified 323 cap/button.

I think one is a cold start system, I want to piss off as much as I can including emission gear.

Won't you need all of that to get it mod plated?
There's a lot of information on here about doing that conversion properly if you want to do it properly.

Notching the firewall will likely require the heater to be removed/ modified.
You cant really get rid of any of the sensors apart from the O2 sensor.
The cold idle valve can be blocked off on the inlet manifold using thin metal like a coke can, but if the valve works you may as well leave it there tho.
