OK.. Driving along Air-con light is on the dash but there is no click, and No RPM change and the fan at the front doesn't start up BUT it does on first starting the car so the fan is functional.. Where can I find the relay to test to see if it is the switch OR the compressor? I have no manual for this bad boy so I cannot even locate the dang fuse box to test for fuses.. I found the one under the bonnet but its not much help.. as its not labelled with anything significant.. |

You need to check a few things first. 1, Is the AC drive belt still there and in good condition? Visually inspect. 2, Is there power to the compressor clutch? Multi meter or test light. 3, Is there gas in the system? Hotwire from battery to compressor clutch. If it engages then your system pressure is either too high or most likely too low. |

Yes all belts are in good condition... I am suspecting since there is no click, that its possibly a fuse.. If the Compressor was faulty, the thermal fan would still spool up.. but its not.. I will shove my head under the bonnet and try and track down the Air-con fuse... |

I'm betting its just low on gas. Is there a place nearby that can re-gas it? |

I'm basing this on similar experiences with other vehicles, but generally if there is no audible "click" and change in revs when the AC button is engaged, it is because the line pressure switch isn't seeing enough refrigerant pressure to allow the compressor to engage. AC systems use an oil mixed in with the refrigerant (R12 in older vehicles, R134a in newer and older retrofitted vehicles up until the past few years) which keeps the compressor lubricated; if too much refrigerant has been lost (which invariably happens over time, depending how much the AC is used) then this switch will prevent the compressor clutch from activating, so that the compressor doesn't destroy itself. Obviously check that the rest of the system (fuse, belt, power) is OK first just in case it is an easy (and cheap) fix, but it sounds like your AC system needs to be recharged - not massively expensive provided your hoses and other gear are still in good condition. If your Zook still runs on R12, budget in a bit extra (~$200ish) to cover the conversion to R134a (new dryer, fittings, etc.) as R12 is now illegal. Cheers, Ben. |

OK.. Found a 25amp fuse next to the Main Fuse box under the bonnet its marked Air... and its Blown.. Will drop another 25amp fuse into it.. and see if it fires up.. If it does.. then I know its just a fuse.. Chances are it got wet in the last Water crossing and shorted out..

Compressor seized then. The fuse blew for a reason, it might pay to drop into a workshop |

Check the condenser fan see if it's seized - that's a fairly common fault on the GVs. |

The Fan spools up when the engine starts so I sorta elliminated that... but Wednesday will reveal the hidden issue.. |

The fan you hear at startup is the engine driven clutch fan, not the condenser fan - look through the grill, you'll see the condenser mounted in front of the radiator, and in front of the condenser is an electric fan - that one can seize and blow the fuse, the clutch fan has no fuse to blow. |

My foot has the midas touch.. I had the Auto cooling guy around to try and fix my A/C in my 4x4.. He was bemused and befuddled as everything he tried didn't work.. Gas Pressure, Check, Compressor clutch kicking in when powered up.. Check.. Fuses all good.. Relay's all good.. So he couldn't find what was wrong.. So I kicked the Bullbar in frustration and Everything WORKS ! The Compressor kicked on and chilled the Cabin in record time... Even though its the middle of winter ! It is suspected that one of the Relay's might be temperamental and I should replace both as a pre-caution. But no leaks or anything which was great ! BUT I do need a new upper radiator hose ? So where would I get one from ??? |

klutched wrote: Got the fan going again today with a bit of lanolin The wiring was stuffed in my sierra, still is actually. Get somebody to check the gas for you and then you need to start eliminating from there IMO. |

Yeah my first 93 Model 5 door Vitara had the worst installed Air con ever.. Not sure why but they completely forgot to install a condensor.. I was wondering why it didn't work.. turned out the whole system had to be replaced... |
