| Post subject: | Vitara CV Shaft Help |
Hey Everyone, My drivers side CV was stuffed so I figured I'd just buy a whole new shaft http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/171018011067 Received it, pulled the old one out and went to put the new one but couldn't get it in. The ring(circlip?) that sits just before the end of the splines diff end was bent. I checked my old shaft and the ring was a perfect circle. I ended up giving up and putting the old shaft back in and putting everything back together, biggest PITA! I contacted the place I got it from and they talked to their suppliers. They sent me a pic of the ring through and it does have bends in it from new. Attachment: Clip.jpg The suppliers said that the ring should have been centred when fitting (not possible because it's not tight so won't stay in place) and to try squeezing the ring together with pliers (tried this too but it wouldn't stay in shape)has anyone got any tips on getting it to go into place? could I use grease to hold it centred? I really don't want to pull the vitara apart again until I know for sure I can get the new shaft in. Thanks!! |

try putting one end in the groove first and then slowly compresses the rest of it going round in the circle putting it in bit by bit. Not sure if that makes sense and you probably already tried that.. but yeah, it might help haha EDIT: realised you were saying the shaft wouldn't go in, not the spring clip? |

Shaft wouldn't go in because of the spring clip |

saga continues, I've been interstate and got home to try getting the CV shaft in again. Took the shaft into a CV place near work to get a new spring clip. Bloke looked at the clip and said it looked fine and that it should be going in. He also mentioned that he's had people bring in shafts to fit but the splines haven't been machine quite right. Try again with the clip on if it still won't go in try the shaft without the clip, still no luck it's probably the splines. Got home tried again no luck, took the clip off still nothing. Am I right in thinking that new shaft should go in just as easily as the old one does? I've contacted the place I bought it from again, they asked for pictures but said they could see no fault even though I said it's the splines causing the issue. They've said I can get a replacement but would have to pay postage again. Surely if the splines aren't right I shouldn't have to pay for the replacements postage! |

do you have the old CV? there are two different sizes of CV for vitaras, compare the two different spline counts/sizes |

it's back in the car again. When it wouldn't go in the first time we counted the splines and both were 22, and both looked to be the same size |

they can be a bit fiddly to line up so it's square & then to get the splines to line up & engage... did you end up getting it sorted? |

nope only just dealing with it today. the one that came out is easy to get in once you've lined it up it just pops in. The new one we were trying for ages it just wouldn't push in, it's not normal is it? The CV place said it's $75 to fit it but I don't want to waste the money if they can't get it in either :/ |

any chance of a pic of the 2 splined ends side by side, is there any visible difference between the 2? |

All I've got is pics of the new one because the old one has gone back in the vitara. The grooves on the new one looked slightly shallower when we had the 2 next to each other, diameter looked to be the same on both |

hmmmm, the start of those splines look really burred & some seem worse than others. can you feel it match up with the splines on the side gear on the first little section? you can run without a CV, just need to macgyver up some spray can lids to cap the inside & outside of the hub & degrease the RHS of the diff, plug with a rag & tape up the hole on the diff. |

I really need to get learned on these things, I'm still so new to all this I was just stoked when I got up to undoing strut bolts by myself. from memory when the shaft went in it felt like it connected and slightly slotted into something but it wouldn't push the rest of the way in. my MacGyver skills are pretty average so I don't think I will! |

It's in Dropped it into Adelaide C.V. Joint & Mechanical Repair at Para Hills and told them if they couldn't get it in to put in another. The guy there was really good, called just before and said that they had to file some of the grooves slightly so it matched up to the original but it's in! |

Hey Atari I haven't been out in ages, my list of stuff to fix was too long and nobody lives this way! Don't think I'll buy from there again, the guy wasn't too helpful and wanted me to pay postage both ways to get a replacement shaft. Place at Para Hills was good though and I thought a decent price. |
