Post subject:  fuel leaking from cap ?

did a quick search but couldn't find the answer I was looking for..

as I found out on the weekend, at hectic slopes fuel decides to part ways with my fuel tank via the cap.. I was reading alittle bit and I saw that the caps are vented? so is there really no other way around this to prevent fuel from pissing out every time the car gets only sharp angles? 1.6 EFI sierra, standard tank I believe.

As far as I know, only very early Sierras vented through tank cap.
My 1.0L Sierra would do that on bad angles.
Most Sierras vent through carbon canister and don't need a vented cap.
An EFI engine is unlikely to be a stock Sierra tank,
so make sure tank plumbing and breathing is correct, then buy a better cap.

There's a rubber seal inside the fuel cap - yours has probably gone hard/perished.

ah, thanks for the prompt response!

I believe the tank is stock.. pump and all the other wizardry certainly does not look stock! haha

when I say leak.. I mean like bloody pissing out, so that would suggest that the cap is in desperate need of renewal ?

I'd try making or buying a new rubber seal first... be way cheaper.

we have had issues with fuel comming out through the key hole in some caps.
we filled the whole key hole up with silicon sealer.

What could be worse is going through some deep water and having water go in the tank.

New caps are on ebay pretty cheap with new seal and key. Draining the tank and flushing the lines is alot harder.

I used to have this problem and after filling the tank up with water while stuck on a large rock in a river. A few people in the club recommend to get a genuine suzuki fuel cap it locks down really tight and have never had the problem again and a lockable one was around $30 and a non lockable was about half that

I didnt realise they were so cheap!

Mines exactly like this one (genuine suzuki) and never leaks.

All Sierras had a carbon canister. Even LJ80s (dunno if 50s had it?) had a separate line that vented into the airbox.

My sierra has a 10c coin siliconed over the key hole.

The locking caps like suzistore has are $20 on eBay.

.

Mine may have been butchered by a previous owner.
Definitely had the keyhole leaking issue.
When I 1.3'd it, it got a carbon canister.

Those caps last for about a year before the seal perishes and fuel starts pouring out again. May be a maruti part, I doubt they are genuine (Jap) good quality parts.

Maybe suzuki can source a genuine one? (not maruti) and in doing so, they'd be able to key it to your ignition (this is how mines done).

Ive never had fuel leak issues with the Suzuki cap.

I'd say its the seal too.
