Hi there, my 1996 vitara wouldn't work in 4wd. Front wheels don't get power when in the locked position. I just wanted to ask if anyone knows if Sierra hubs and vitara hubs are the same internally. I think they are the standard black aisin ones. I want to service the hubs and hoping it will fix the problem. Any advice would be very helpful.

Thanks Atari and Krat! I did watch that video before. I was just looking at this thread which is a simple step by step guide and wondering if they are the same on the Vit

If you guys have done them yourself. I just take them apart and clean them up nicely, regrease and assemble and they should work fine? Is there anything that can go wrong with them or is it just that they need a service because they build up a lot of gunk?

I have good lithium based grease and parts cleaner so I'll just need to grab some gasket material because I assume the gaskets are going to be rooted.

You dont need to put much grease in them. The service manual on the sierra talks about just lightly greasing.

There is not alot to them, not much can go wrong.

yeah that thread only shows how to reco the front section of the FWH, the vitara's are essentially the same, that youtube video shows the whole lot.

Good day. I stripped one of my hubs down and it looked terrible. Super corrosion in there. I have cleaned it up but unsure if the big spring attaches to the clutch mechanism or does it just push against it when assembling? In the video it looks like his clutch mechanism is connected to the spring. Unless mine is slightly different. Any advice would be helpful.

yeah i think that one just sits in there... but it's been 7 years since i had mine apart & they're getting to the stage where they need pulling down & cleaning.

if i'm right welcome to hell! the little spring holds the cog and the other part (no idea what it's called! part x?) together. Part x should be attached to the cog and is the bit that locks the cog into groove on the rest of the assembly. see picture below this is what your cog/spring/part x should look like. it needs to be like this before you try putting the big spring in and locking it together.

from your picture it looks like you've got the big spring and part x already locked into the assembly.
I just ran out and took mine apart, the spring starts in the cog then winds up into part x. hope my picture makes sense but between mine and the original you will hopefully get what I mean. The spring is a pain in the arse to get right, I found feeding it through with pliers once I got it into the start of the grooves worked best.

Just checked out Atari's link and the pics in there are great. The bit I called part x is called a fowler pawl. There's 4 pics in the link of the guy attaching it to the cog, they should be the help you need

Thanks that's what I needed!!

This part confuses me, my gear must be slightly different. Look how his spring end ends at the "end spline". Mine has another little half spline as the last spline and mine looks back to front to his.

when I've put mine back together i think they sat like that too. Once you put the spring through the fowler pawl it might move position in the cog slightly too

Thanks again. When I get home I'll try get it into the right position. The bent up bit at the other end of the spring doesn't end in the right place on mine. Knowing me in probably doing something small but stupid wrong.

mine looked similar the first time i pulled them apart! Maybe try getting the bent up bit in the right position first then put the spring into the cog? Thats how its being done in the link Atari put up

Cheers 1oftheboys! When I got home last night I gave it a crack and got it straight away. Definately helps to get the bent up bit in position first.

The other side should be much more quicker now that I know how the thing works
