I put this in the n00b section, because it is a pretty obvious question and I am still hesitant as to whether I should have posted it, but I did a few Google searches and couldn't find much.

I have a SV620, weighing in at about 1.6 tonne (with all my mods) and it is very slow! Which is understandable in my opinion. My question is, how do the 1.6L (4 cyl) long wheel base vitaras hold up, with same sort of mods as me? Smaller engine yet, about the same weight (obviously a bit lighter due to engine), I feel like it would be painfully slow and chew heaps of fuel?

Pretty random question I know, but I just wanted to clear that up hahaha.
cheers.

Yep. Fuel consumption (in my experience so far anyway) is pretty comparable, but the V6 flies compared to the 1.6.

I lust after J20 motors, though after winning tatts it would be bigger.
But my 1.6 LWB tows a camper at a reasonable rate considering.

Oh really, hahah. Cool. Definitely glad I got a V6

Oh that's alright then, I always thought a 1.6 would be completely gutless. hahha

Gee, and I thought my SV620 was bad. Sorry to hear that

all i remember is leaving polar_bears carby swb for dead years & years ago & i wasn't even trying... both had 30's & i still had stock gearing. the EFI's are marginally better but in reality without having the option to regear it's a uphill battle from the start once you fit largish tyres.

That was going to be my other question, how do the carby's swb hold up, alot less weight so I would think the 1.6L would suit a shorty.
Strange, I honestly didn't notice much when I went to 5.12, but then again, I am pretty forgetful

Yeah.
I went away camping/hunting on the weekend with some mates, and did some wheeling.
It was a 3 hour drive into the bush, and I was struggling uphills. I had to take the eski out of the car that had 40Kgs of meat in it, and put it in somone else's car cause it was really weighing me down, Made quite a difference but I was still behind everyone.

Once we started wheeling though, it's fine. Its just getting there!!

I've got an EFI so its not too bad haah.

I need some 5.8 diffs, but they are rarer and dearer than a J20 Vit :)

Oh really wow. I have had 4 people in the car, and every other morsel or space filled with camping gear, including nearly two cases of beer and I don't struggle. Mind you, there is a HUGE decrease in power with all that in that car (nearly 2 tonne packed), but seems to still go ok.
Didn't know a 1.6L came out in EFI, nice.

Wouldn't mine 5.8s, that would make a heck of a difference

Two *cartons of beer, we aren't American.

My mates LWB g16b vit is a rocket compared to my sierra :( and my sierra goes better than my mates diesel hilux, now that farking slow.

Yep!

My mate has an 80 series land cruiser, diesel (no turbo).

He was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind all of us. That thing goes like a piece of crap in comparison.

I drove an 80 series and found it to go alright? Didn't hear a turbo and my mate said it wasn't turbo.

Non turbo L engine hiluxes are in a world of their own when it comes to gutlessness.

But put the same tinny on the hilux as my sierra, when you are towing the hilux uses basically no more fuel (it is good on fuel in the 1st place), and it does not slow it down as much. They do have their advantages. 8O

Shit, hahahah. I suppose a 1L or even 1.3L is tiny when you pile mods on. Actually yeah, My mate has a SWB 2.5 L Turbo deisel, and I flogged him at the lights, and on the dirt

My 1.6 Vit is fast enough to keep up with traffic and fast enough that even my other half can overtake a triple road train comfortably when driving it on the open road.

Around town the economy is about the same as my Sierra (which doesn't even have a roofrack). Without the rack and on the highway it has returned about 9.5L/100km. Worst economy I have ever gotten was about 15L/100km but loaded above GVM, with spare tyre, and 450mm high spacecase on the a basket travelling at 110km/h. Usual economy is about 11L/100km - roofrack/lifted/215s/carrying about 100km gear in the back and 2 people.

Best economy I have ever gotten in a 1.6L Vit was my SWB soft-top (carby) and it got 440km before running out of fuel from a VERY dented 42L tank.

That actually doesn't sound too bad. Getting pretty mixed opinions, not sure if it is just because I am used to speed (came from a 3.8L commo) but I think my SV620 is seriously slow. Sure if I put my foot down I could probably over take some cars on the highway, but the fuel gauge would noticeably drop right in front of my eyes (that's why i don't do it :D ), that is why I thought the 1.6L would have to be HEAPS worse. I get about 15L/100km in the city and probably 13 or 14L/100 highway, pretty poor I think, still in the process of investigating it.

bolt on the stockies & see how it goes... it's not just the size but the weight & rolling resistance too.

FYI 215/75r15 = 27.7" & i'm betting it was an AT or HT... that would explain why it was still zippy & had decent economy.

Sorry mate, but the ole 3.8 is not being used to speed, nor the 3.6MPFI or the 3.6DI. :thefinger:

They are slower than NGVs

Sadly it's not at easy as 'bolting on' I sitll have stock rims, so the stock tyres are sitting, rimless under the house. I am still searching for cheap sunnies to replace the stock ones. I wouldn't mind try stock tyres not though, considering I have given a pretty major service to my car in attempt to fix my fuel.

Ahh okay, still getting my head around metric wheel sizing, always used imperial :?

Haha. The NGV bit was a reference to the AZ dragrace thread

I'm actually hankering for a track day, but I know I'm going to have my arse handed to me by anything thats actually remotely designed to go fast. Still who cares, be good to get out of the system.

My Sierra has Hankook Dynapro MTs...
And still okay economy!

A mate had an old Hilux with a 2.2l diesel in terrible shape, my LJ81 that could barely top 80 on the flat was monumentally faster than it.
