Can the input shaft be removed from the front of the gearbox (like the old holdens) without disassembly of the gearbox? Are there uncaged needle rollers waiting to drop out into the gearbox?

Upon reading the service manual, it is not clear if the input shaft bearing retainer is the only thing preventing the removal of the input shaft without splitting the case. Does anyone know if the circlip around the input shaft bearing sits flush up against the front of the case and is held by the retainer, or if it sits in a groove machined into the case?
