Hey guys,
Looking to buy my first zook, just need a quick bit of insight. Pretty keen to get myself a jimny, however living off of apprentice wages right now, so definitely buying at the budget end of the market (4-5k). Examples I have found at this price range are earliest models and getting up around the 250K mark. Is this a big deal? How long will an engine last in these things? Things to look out for?
If its looking like a bad idea to buy one this long in the tooth, my other options are to go for a sierra instead, or save my pennies and get one with <200k.
Any help is appreciated guys,
Cheers!

I think it really depends in what your looking for out of a car. If you want a/c and mod cons go the jimny. If you want cheap and fun motoring go the sierra. For 5k you would prob get a decent sierra. I'd suggest driving one before you drop your dough. They take a bit of getting used to if your used to a sedan or newish hatch.

I'm going to say it's not really engine life that's the problem. Replacement G16B long motors are pretty cheap (and an upgrade in torque) but with 250K on board, the whole car is going to be getting a bit ropey. These are light and cheaply made cars, they don't handle high KM like a landcruiser. I'd say all of the driveline is going to be getting tired and end up needing work. Gearbox/diffs in particular.
If you are buying at the bottom of the Jimny market, you're also likely to be looking at cars that have done some beach or off road work.
I reckon motors are good for 160 to 220K depending on service history and use. 250 is possible, but it's also likely to be getting pretty tired.
I have two G16B's in cars here, one has 235K, the other just over 200K. both run well, the older one has a head gasket/head crack issue, it uses some coolant. ( I think this was my fault from overheating it) the other runs strong. Both are smoky on startup (valve stem seals) the one that's older smokes a little all the time. The younger doesn't smoke at all afar it's started.
I'd say that's pretty representative of G engine life - at 250K on the original motor there will be bills in the near future.
If you find an auto one (and they are awesome) check the auto functions properly and the fluid isn't burnt. They run notoriously hot and they are crazy expensive to fix. Find a good one though (and fit a temp gauge) and laugh at your mates while you outdrive them in the bush.
Steve.
