Hi guys,
its been a while since iv used my vitara and as such been a while since iv been on the site.

The speedo has stopped on the vitara and im struggling to find a replacement. The cable seems ok but the part it inserts into at the rear of the dial seems rounded out. I have an sv420 and wondered if the older or newer model dials would work? As the sv420 parts seems hard to find...

Appreciate your help guys!

The input shaft of the speedo rotates a disc magnet and the dial needle is connected to a shallow metal "cup" over the magnet that gets dragged when the magnet moves. A couple of tests you can do:

1. While the dash is out find a small screwdriver or something similar that you can jamb into the speedo input. Turn the driver and you should be able to make the speedo needle move. It will on work in one direction, so make sure you try both ways. Use a battery drill if you like, but it doesn't need fast revs to make the needle move if it is working. If the needle doesn't move, it must be seized. See if you can move it with a probe to unstick it.

2. Drive the car with the dash out. You should be able to see the end of the speedo cable rotating. If it isn't rotating something is wrong with the cable of the cable drive gear in the box.

If both of these tests seem OK, but your speedo isn't working, it is most likely that when the cable is inserted into the back of the speedo, it hasn't engaged properly. Make sure the collar is push on all of the way. Sometimes I have trouble with this when I have had the dash out.

Thanks for the reply John. Had the dash out today And the cable is ok but the needle is broken. ImageImage

So it looks like i need to find a replacement. My question is will any of the vitaras speedo gauge fit as a replacement? Such as the 1.6 or the 2.0 v6? Here is the backImage

Can't help with your question about instrument compatibility, unfortunately. My guess would be if it looks the same and fits, it will work.

It would probably be possible to press the needle axle back into the drive, but finding the right position would be difficult. FWIW, the speedo is calibrated by two things: the start position of the needle (which is set by physically moving the needle) and the spring pretension (which can be set by moving the position of the fixed end of the spring). Between these two adjustments, you can get pretty accurate speed alignment at high and low speeds, using a GPS reference.

Ok no worries. Thanks for trying to help anyway John :-)

Everywhere in aus wanted 150-200 for the gauge out of the 1.6 vitara and I would of had to remove the components and place it back in my cluster. But I found a brand new gauge for my sv420 delivered from the UK for 50 dollars! Bargain!Image

No worries. Did you realise your car will now only do 160kph, whereas with the old speedo it would do 200 8O

(It will show the correct speed.)

I don't reckon that's a bargain. IMHO that's a pain of a thing.

Any 1.6 or 2.0 EFI vitara speedo would work, along with lots of other suzuki speedos that used a VSS in them- I have a speedo from a 1980's swift or barina or something in my vitara cluster. It came with a VSS and was free (I recall) from a wrecker who didn't know what he was looking at (as in he didn't realise it had a VSS in it)

look at the back of any Suzuki cluster - if it has the two screws you can see below and to the left of the speedo drive, then it's a VSS speedo and will bolt in.

AFAIK all the metric speedos use the same ratio. 637 rev/km.

Hey steve. I'm pretty happy with 50 delivered. Seen as I had tried scrap yards asking them for the sv420 and when they said they didn't have it i asked for others that I could use and not one got back to me with solutions. And the ones that I did they wanted 150-200 for the whole cluster and wouldn't split them.

Not too bad for the price of a carton and its new :-)
