since putting in the auto transfer case behind the jimny manual i have been flogging the car in 1st/2nd and haven't noticed anything unusual.
but tuesday week ago i was out walking the dog (i wasn't walking, clearly) when i came across a nice 40 m or so long mud puddle where a track used to be. which is about 20 m from the mangroves.
i drove through it, 2nd low range, it almost bogged down a few times but i managed to get through without touching the clutch pedal. the water was up round the doors in parts and with a 2" BL i think this may have put most of the gearbox/ transfer underwater.

since doing this when taking off from a stop in 1st the clutch feels a tad gummy and feels like it is grabbing oddly which makes the car shake a bit if you let the clutch out slowly. the vibration occurs mid movement or so. slipping the clutch doesn't appear to clear the problem by using friction to clean the surfaces.

how can i clean the clutch or check things are ok, without dropping the gearbox?

you can get somebody to hold the clutch in and hose it out, hard to get to but might help.
