Post subject:  G16a into sierra...worth it? + a conversion question
Hi all,
We have aquired a cheap G16A carby engine in good condition. We were originally aiming for a G16B EFI conversion to replace our Sierra G13BA motor. Just wondering if it is worth doing the G16A swap? Its 8 valve and the power increase is about 10-12bhp as far as I can tell. Or should we just wait and do the 16B EFI? Naturally any power increase is great but dunno if 12bhp is worth it.
Any advice would be great, cheers!

I went from stock everything to g16a with full exhaust system and can say it is great, and the conversion is very easy! not aware of the power of the efi tho, I have a spare g16a in Brisbane if you want to buy it?

You need the adapter plate if you got g16a or g16b.
its not a huge amount of work to fit a g16a, but I suspect you will want a g16b later anyway (especially if you have driven something with a g16b).
Are you going to get it certed/engineered?

How cheap is the g16a and how long do you intend to go before the g16b?
Is the g13ba showing any signs of problems and the g16a is a stopgap measure?

If it is cheap enough (and you can sell it for what you paid), and you dont mind a day of work while you wait for the g16b, go for it.

But generally I wouldnt spend any money on anything that would be better spent on a g16b.

My opinion is if you have a tired engine that needs replacing and the only engine you have around is a G16A, then chuck it in. If the 1.3 is working fine, then keep driving it until it's no longer working fine and then replace it with whatever you have lying around (if that happens to be a cheap G16A, go for it).

If you just want to swap it out for no other reason than to go from a G13 to a G16, I wouldn't bother. But that's just me, and I'm lazy.

Thanks for the replies. We already have the G16A (thanks anyway rockcrawlerdude) and although our 1.3 engine is running fine we were thinking of doing the swap anyway for a bit more power and torque. We would get it certed and we would drive it for as long as we could/until we decided to do the G16b swap. At this stage we are pretty happy with the idea of the carby 16A...easier for running repairs etc although of course the efi does have its benefits! Got the G16A so cheap that we can throw a few hundred dollars at it maybe get it re-bored etc for a bit of extra power. Let the fun begin!

Unless you intend to keep the g16a, I consider it a waste of time and money.
You wont get much power out of working the g16a on the cheap, to make it worthwhile.
Considering your g13ba isnt problematic, I dont understand your reasoning behind working, installing and certing a temporary motor.

However if it is solely because you can/want to, go for it

Should I put a 3.8 v6 I just picked up for cheap? Any power increase is a good power increase.

I reakon go for it, but the g16b efi would be 100x better.

Cheap motor doesn't mean cheap install.

I wouldn't bother opening it up and getting rebored or anything, I'd keep it as a spare motor. Keep looking for the G16b and if the 1.3 before you get one put the G16a in as a temporary motor. It doesn't take long and you can transfer the modded sump and intake over the the 16b if you upgrade again.

Before G16B efi engines were readily available G16A was the favoured conversion, I am guilty of fitting a few of the G16A engines. Before adapter kits were available we made a new passenger side engine mount, welded tags on the side of the bell housing to pick up the bottom bolts and drilled out the top bell housing bolt holes to take the larger top bolts. Personally I think it is a good upgrade, yes it is not the best possible upgrade, but then again neither is a G16b the ultimate upgrade. It's a bit like saying it's not worth replacing your F8A LJ engine with an F10A because it's only a moderate power upgrade and still carbie. I don't know of anyone that has fitted an F10D 16v efi engine to their LJ yet but I am sure that if they are ever readily available in Australia people will be saying its not worth fitting an F10A.

Hi all, just a quick question - not sure if we need any parts of the Vitara power steering set-up (pump, hoses etc) for the G16A conversion into the sierra? (obviously not looking to keep P/S, just wondering if any components are needed). Probably a silly question but just wanted to check before I sell it on.
