Hey could someone explain what this is. Image

Was cleaning some parts today and wondered what this was. Couldnt find anything in the fantastic Haynes haha and iv tried searching the net but its hard when I'm not sure what I'm looking for. But anyway when I took it of it was clogged up on the part and on the intake manifold.

What does it do.
What would the clogged up holes be a result of and what implications would they have on the car.

Appreciate your help.

EGR Valve, you should clean it out and chase out the passageways back through to the exhaust manifold. If it sticks open it causes idling and running problems

Thanks!
The valve is clean now and I cleaned out what I could see on the intake side using some MAF cleaner and cotton swabs, so maybe an inch or so inside.

What should I do next, will I need to remove the intake manifold and clean under there?

Try starting it up with the EGR valve off and see if it will blow the muck out by itself.

If it doesn't sound bad then the passageway is blocked, so you should be OK, I would just put the EGR back on.
