Does anyone know what pressure is to be expected out of these mech fuel pumps. Im looking at changing the fuel pump over to an electric one but not sure what pressure to go for, any info would be good

I think they are 3-5 psi (psi range on electric fuel pumps for cars with carbies)

X2, Mechanical ones last for hundreds of thousands of kilometres and normally give you advance warning of failure thousands of kilometres before they stop working.

Just curious, because it popped up, what are the advanced warning signs?? I've not had one go but would be good to store the signs in the noodle so if/when it happens maybe I might recognize it..

Firstly, oil weeping out the relief port creating a visible leak or fuel weeping out the relief port creating a noticeable smell. Later you can get fuel mixing in your oil noticeably thinning it out and making it smell strange but this won't necessarily happen. Eventually the pump will start to fail and cause your car to run badly and stall and take a bit to get started again, but with a few revs you can still drive it.

Also, carby issues (blocked jets) are a sign the diaphragm is failing and bits are falling off.

bumstein, the drain is the pipe with the bend in it coming out of the bottom of the pump in this picture:



Not all fuel pumps have the pipe, but all have the hole. The pipe is really only to direct the leaking oil/fuel away from the starter motor so it just runs down the bell housing. If anything at all is coming out of that pipe, it's time for a new pump pronto.

I have been told before by people who sell non genuine parts to only ever buy a genuine suzuki fuel pump - the aftermarket ones are apparently rubbish. They're probably still more reliable than an electric pump though. Genuine pumps seem to last around 20 years.

It appears that I was given some wrong advice about the fuel pump. The sierra was playing up under load like it was staving for fuel it has new fuel filter and lines and plugs, dizzy didnt look to bad and looks fairly new itself so a mate who is a hobby mechanic advised to change the pump out for an electric. After reading this I might reconsider there dosnt seem to be any oil coming out of the relief tube, a bit more of an investigation is needed i think
