hey guys

i have upgraded to a 78 amp alternator on my little g13a and im just wondering if it is enough for all my accessories to just have the one battery and bigger alternator or will i need dual battery's?
Accessories.
- Thermo fan (10")
- uhf (80 channel)
- 42" light bar ( 240 watt )
- 4 x 7" spottys (55 watt )
- USB port and accessory port
- 2 x amps (800 watt and 1200 watt) the 800 watt has 1 40 amp fuse and the 1200 has 2 40 amp fuses
- headunit
- tacho guage
and im planning on a winch

obviously not all is going to be used at once the most being used would probably be if out trailing at night and i would be charging my phone also running the light bar and spottys and having the thermo fan on and playing music using the amps and also having the uhf on and using the tacho which is almost everything i guess but anyways what do you guys recon? i would need a dual battery set up? or would the alternator cope with just a bigger battery?

Accessories.

- USB port and accessory port 3amp
That's 52 amps and you aren't even running the engine...
I'd recommend you fit a falcon 110a alternator and a larger battery. Save fitting the 2nd battery and controller until you fit a winch.

Get rid of the thermo fan and refit a shroud with either a stock fixed fan or a vitara viscous hub unit.

Want33's for the win.

Also bear in mind a 78A alternator won't often, if ever, produce 78A. below 3000 rpm, and when they're hot are two examples.

You'd be surprised how far below the rated output alternators deliver on a test bench.

110A alt and a big battery.

How much does a falcon alternator cost? And recon it will fit in the lror gm 78 amp alternator bracket

Falcon alts can be found at any wreckers for about $50.
Get a EF-EL 6 cylinder 110a Mitsubishi alternator.

It will bolt up to the original sierra alt bracket if you can drill out the hole a bit.

And just a bigger optima or something?
What about wiring the falcon alternator?

Optima are great if you can afford it but any SEALED battery will be fine.
(Why sealed? you ask..... because when you roll the car you will be glad you don't have battery acid leaking everywhere.)

As far as wiring goes you may as well just read the rather large and detailed multi page thread already dedicated to the subject.
I can't do links on this pos tablet but if you hit the search button at the top of the page and feed it details like falcon and alternator I'm sure you'll find everything you need.

Yeah battery acid isnt cool haha
And i get optimas for discount at work

I shall do i shall do

And you didnt mention the amps before is there a reason for that or no?
And the light bar takes less than 15 amps

Basic laws of electricity say that watts dived by volts equals amps. V=I/R
240 watts divided by 12 volts equals 20 amps.

Yeah fair enough but far out the alternator swap means swapping out pullys and shit too not just the alternator

Post subject:  Re: will i be okay with just the bigger alternator.

You can, just run a falcon alt on a single v belt. Not ideal, but it does work. You'll need the pulley from an EA or similar alt and maybe a spacer (I think I got mine from an EA alt too)

Steve.

Why isnt it ideal steve?

And i just read on lror that the bracket i bought frim them should house almost any gm alternator so i might see if i can get a gm chevy alternator to fit being 130 amps

Because the surface area of the single V belt is much less than a multirib one, hence you need a heap of tension on the belt to try and stop it slipping. Under a heavy load this is quite hard to achieve.

Post subject:  Re: will i be okay with just the bigger alternator.

Don't bother trying to run an alt greater than 80a off a V belt. It just won't last.
Even Ford ran twin Vbelts on XD's with a 65a alt

The pulley conversion is a piece of piss and at the end of the day is one of the easiest, best value mods you will ever do to a sierra.

In the thread about fiting the falcon alternator is says you can no longer use the fan or some shit

If it does, then it's completely incorrect. Stock fan (or better, vitara viscous fan) fits fine.

and just swap to barina water pump pulley and crank pulley?

Yep, I recall that's the way to do it for a 1.3.

What pulleys and alt bracket work on a F10 engine for this swap?
Regards.
Donny.

Post subject:  Re: will i be okay with just the bigger alternator.

For the 1.3 sierra engine
You need to use a carby vitara water pump pulley.
If you use a swift pulley, you need a swift water pump and then lose the mechanical fan.

I'll repeat....
Use a carby vit water pump pulley, then you retain the sierra water pump and can use the vit viscous fan or stock sierra fan.

The harmonic balancer (crank pulley) is from a swift or possibly a carby vit. Check the bolt count.

Its not incorrect, its just the worst option.

Post subject:  Re: will i be okay with just the bigger alternator.

wait why does it have to be a carbie 1.6 arnt the efi 1.6 bottom end the same anyways?

Author:  jdk81 [ Thu Sep 18, 2014 6:15 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: will i be okay with just the bigger alternator.

No.

The efi (16v engines) have wider timing belts, which means the plastic timing cover is further out, which means the 1.6 carby multi rib pulley interferes with the timing cover.
the wider belt also means the harmonic balancer is out further and.no longer alligns with anything.

The wider timing belt throws all the pulleys out of alignment.

Its why the sierra alt bracket works on the sierra and 1.6 carbie vit.
and the carby swift and vit water pump pulleys have a different offset to efi ones.

Carby swift have different water pump and different bolt spacing.
Early on people used swift water pumps and swift crank pulleys, and thermo fans until people realised how awesome the vit viscous clutch fan is.

i work at supercheap and will be able to order in the parts all new pretty cheep is there any perticular year and model for both the vit and the falcon?

Good luck buying the pulleys new through supercrap.
Even IF they can supply them, you will pay a lot more than at the wreckers or from someone on here.

I really do hope you aren't offering automotive advice to customers.

Coily pulley set will work too.
