Yes it is hard. Yes it requires special tools. Take it to a diff shop. I've seen too many sierra and vitara gearsets wrecked by people thinking they are easy to set up.

Its not so much that its hard, in that it is tedious. And its even more tedious without the correct tools. The main issue is, if you don't get it 100% correct, it will destroy the gears fairly quickly.
My mate and I tried very hard to setup the gears as good as we could in his clubman, followed the manual, and any internet guides we could find. We even used a his uncles mechanic workshop who had reasonable tools. We got it pretty good we thought and it worked well, but it took about 6 months for the gears to get more and more noisy. Ended up taking it to a diff shop after that, and the gears were toast and needed replacement.
It cost me $110 to get the pinion seal replaced in my sierra diff, as well as the gears setup and checked. Well worth it I reckon.
With yours pending condition not a bad idea to replace the carrier bearings while you are there, as well as the pinion bearings. (ie ~$100 just in bearings...) and pending the condition of the gears it might be worthwhile lapping the gears too. costs start to add up, so you don't want it all to come to literal grinding hault by not setting it up properly.
They say the poor man buys twice....unfortunately when it comes to differentials, it can't be more true....

Having only taken the center out, with no previous experience, I can tell you that is daunting enough. Pay someone the money to have it done, mine cost $120 to swap pinon and crown over. Much cheaper and easier then wrecking them and having to start again
