Having a few issues with my sons Coily, if it sits for a week or so it wont start. Cranks over fine just no go. Today I dumped a bit of juice down the carby after trying to get it to fire for 30 or 40 seconds of intermittent cranking and it fired straight up then died. Dumped a bit more down and it ran coughed a bit and then idled. Once its been running and warms up its fine for the rest of the day. Its just the initial start after sitting for a few days. The fuel pump is near new, well according to the guy I bought the vehicle from, it does look newish and in the spares he gave me was an old fuel pump so Im guessing he changed it. To me it appears to have the fuel draining back to the tank, is there some sort of non return valve in the fuel line or the carb? It has the standard Suzuki carb fitted and is the standard 1.3 motor.
Appreciate any assistance.

There is no non-return valve. I'd replace the fuel pump and check that the fuel cap is vented.

Is there a way to test them? I have had the fuel line off and cranked it over and it shoots fuel at least 1 meter + like I said it not that old and Im reluctant to put a $130 pump on it if it doesn't require it. The cap is an easy try but again I would think that would get worse the longer it ran. Im still leaning towards the carb having an issue, there must be some sort of non return valve setup in it.......maybe the fuel Cutoff solenoid is dodgy? Anyone else have any ideas

If the car sits a while (more so when the weather is hot) the petrol will evaporate in the carby - If the fuel filter is clogged it will cause a vacuum and make it hard for the pump to get fuel up to the carby - when you pour fuel down and it fires the pump works much harder and can get petrol up.
I also had a pump problem one a 1.3lt and just took the mechanical pump off and replaced it with a electric pump and its great.

Anyone else have any ideas There is no non-return valve but one of the two valves in the fuel pump could be letting fuel drain back over the week it sits. $130 for a pump? Is that genuine Suzuki?

Think I might fit a non-return valve in the fuel line and a new fuel filter and see what happens. Non genuine on gaybay
