| Post subject: | alternator mismatch |
hi i have a coily im getting on the road and the alternator doesnt line up with the other pulleys it sits about 10 mm forward of the waterpump which is quite an angle when looking at the belt. looks like the waterpump pulley us rubbing/cutting the timing cover too so something is not right. its a g13a engine (engine swap??)shouldnt a coily be a g13ba? whats the difference? maybe the last owner tried to put a coily alt on a WT motor? what makes this a pain in the ass is that its out at a mates house so its hard to solve problems with it not here. cheers

My suggestion would be to bolt the top alternator bracket to the back of the water pump, rather than the front. The angle will be from the bracket on the bottom of the alternator, so have a look underneath once the top has been moved to see what can be done. |

that was our first thought too,but then the bracket underneath will be way out. the bottom mount isn't a match anyway so we know its the wrong alt should have taken a pic of that too dammit! its a 1.5 hour return trip to get that pic. |

IIRC the bottom bracket has a 2 bolts, One that stays on the mount (press fit i believe) and the other comes out, Are you sure you've got it sitting correctly on the bottom bracket? |

looks to me like your water pump is the problem. not the alt. id be getting a new one as it looks like the shaft is bent and the pully is angled |

Coilies had multirib belts from factory so you possibly have a mashup of incompatible pulleys or brackets. IMO find someone wrecking a g13 and get a matching set of pulleys and brackets. |

Regarding steves post Barina wp wouldnt bolt to fan, different bolt pcd and larger spigot? on wp to locate the wp pulley. Barina alternators have a different offset, which doesn't appear to be one as the pulley isnt close enough to the alternator IIRC Being a g13a, it is definitely a different engine. IMO The alternator appears to be mounted incorrectly. I would remove it and try again. Any pics of alternator mount underneath? Regarding the plastic shroud The belt rubbing on plastic timing cover shroud happens often. Bolts holding the plastic can come loose, and/or the plastic shroud warps a little. its not a major concern, but is a rwc item IIRC edit: fixed a mistake |

dont know much about suzis but i think there might be a spacer missing from the water pump or a incorrect pulley fitted to it, as the bolts look tight and it should not be rubbing on the plastic cover |

Some pump flanges have a pin sticking out with a corresponding hole in the pulley - If you don't line it up it will sit at an angle as that one seems to be. This would account for your problem so take the pulley off an check as it will only take a few minutes. |

ok so i have my car and pulled some stuff out to have a gander and see whats up. the angle of the alternator was because there was no rear bolt on the alt and when the belt is pulled tight caused an angle. i think it needs a long through bolt too, the alternator number when googled comes up as a g13a sierra + holden. so right one but pulley too far forward?? will take to wreckers when they open tomorrow. when looking at better angle the water pump is fine and inline and paralell and turns with no wobble, so no problem there. the centre bolt is missing from the timing cover which caused the waterpump to rub on it, and for a while too i think. will order a replacement. so 2 questions, does look loke a g13a alt engine mount? and does the pulley on the alt look like the right spacing? cheers heading to wreckers tomorrow(hopt they are open) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Bracket looks the same as mine (G13a) Whack a bolt all the way through and see if the alt sits straight and inline. |

will pull it straight but doesn't align it with other pulleys. thanks for conformation on bracket. |

Looking at the pics again, the pulley on the alternator seems to be sitting out pretty far from the case. So I checked one I've got here.

I have got one here you can try, but has the ribbed pulley on it? I thought all Coilys came with the ribbed pulleys? |

Can you undo the alternator pulley? You may be able to adjust how far the pulley sits out. I did this to swap pulleys and adjust position of the pulley so i could use a barina alt when my sierra one died. |
