Post subject:  alternator wiring??

i cant figure what is up with my battery light, the sj80 was sold to me with a dud alternator (he told me) and while not charging the battery light has never been on, not even with ignition on and motor not running??

anyway the second hand alt i got has a different plug a two terminal in a T shape (original was round 3plug but only 2 wires.) If i ground the light wire the batt light will come on, but wont come on when connected to the alt terminals?? go figure? anybody had this before?

also while poking wires the engine bogged down and volts went 12.5 to 13.7 so i guess the second hand one works right? im used to seeing mid 14's an my falcon's.

so i dont have to poke around like an amateur anymore, which wire is which and where on the alt's T plug does it go?? wires are black with white stripe and white with red stripe.

cheers hope u understand my dribble.

new alternator is from a different model. no difference other than that plug AFAIK. i believe (could be wrong) that NT sierras had the T plug, WT and coilys had the round plug

cant say which way they go, but it should be a white with red stripe, thats the battery light wire, and the black with white stripe is the charge sense wire.
