Post subject:  diff nomenclature: pins and bolts

N00b question. Getting into diff stuff for the first time. When you guys talk about bolts and pins what exactly do you mean?
When I look at the rear diff of my 2003 GV I see 8 bolts mounting the diff centre into the housing/live axle, but I have commonly read that GV rear is 12 bolt and front is 10 bolt, are you guys talking about something else? Like for example the number of bolts on the ring gear?

Secondly; 'pins' when you say front is 2 pin or 3 pin what does this mean? In a lockright 1510 you get 1 long and 2 short pins that force the clutches apart this makes 3? or if vitara rear is 4 pin and front is 2 pin do you mean you are only using 2 of the 4 small pins with springs that are included. Dumb dumb question I know but I can't find the answer anywhere on the net.

Cheers

I will accept any flaming you may want to give without complaint, but please answer my question.

The number of bolts refers to the number of bolts holding the ring gear to the diff center, and the number of pins refers to the number of what I will describe as "diff pinion" or "spider gear" axles ...

Image

This picture shows the internal gears of a differential - you can see the two "side gears" (which are top & bottom in the picture), and the other two gears are known as diff pinions, or spider gears - as you can see they are on a cross pin or axle - that is the diff pin.

Differentials can be built with two, three or four diff pinions (with two & four being the most common) a two pinion diff will have a single cross pin (as shown), a three pinion diff will have three pins which meet in a central support block, and a four pinion diff will typically have three pins (one long & two short) that also meet in a support block.

The pin count has nothing to do with the small pins & springs in the lockright - all four of those will be used.

Just to add to the confusion, some so called four pin diffs only have three pins, and two pin diffs in reality will only have one.
