is it possible to just replace the boot/dust cover without much effort? what has to come off / what procedure?

absolute learner :/

if its too much i'll just wait and do the whole clutch later?

If I remember correctly, two bolts hold the clutch slave cylinder in place, remove them, remove the slave, you can let it hang from the hose for the 5~10 minutes the job takes, it's not that heavy - slip the old boot off, slip the new one on & reinstall the clutch slave - just make sure no one steps on the clutch whilst you have the slave unbolted.

15~20 minutes tops.

thankyou for the advice ... thought something like that when I climbed under and had a look, but wanted to confirm.
wanted to make sure wouldn't have to bleed system for some reason if I took that off too.

Cheers

Normally bleeding would only be needed if you opened up the hydraulic side, which is not required.

Having said that - the reason I suggested you made sure no one presses the clutch is that it may be possible to pop the slave cylinder apart by doing that whilst it is hanging - some of us have little apprentices around whilst we work, and they can sometimes cause a lot of extra work. If the slave cylinder does come apart, bleeding will be required.
