Hi, I'm a noob!!
Would really like to know what AMPs a brand new alternator should be pumping out?
My clampmetre says it's pumping 0.8 of an AMP at idol.. Is this normal?

Thanks!!!

Amperage won't be constant. It will depend on state of charge of your battery and what accessories you have running. Your alternator will have a peak current it can supply but I don't know what that will be. Somewhere between 60 and 100 amps maybe ?

Turn on your lights fan and whatever else you can. That number will jump up a bit.

I am sure you know this already but
Also make sure you are using a DC clamp meter.
Also make sure you only have the clamp around one side of the circuit.
I have also found with my fluke DC clamp meter it's not super accurate at low amperages.

Marc.

A standard SJ70 alternator is 45A max. At idle the output will be less than what the headlights and coil consume so output won't be much. Which wire is the clamp meter measuring? What is the output at a fast idle and say 3000rpm with headlights and demistor fan running?
