i'm a bit unsure how this works but here's what the story is. after converting to a G16B i used 'cheap' oil just for the first few weeks, it was castrol GTX modern engine at 15w-40 that supercheap auto often has out for under $18.

after using that as a kinda clean out oil i swapped to penrite everyday full synthetic at 10w-40.

what i found is that using the GTX i had no tics or sounds in the engine whatsoever, but immediately after the oil change to the penrite the engine is slightly ticky after it has warmed up, but absolutely no noise when cold or first started.

am i right in thinking the viscosity is the same for both oils when warmed up, that being 40, but the GTX is thinner at cold being 15 ? or have i got this totally wrong ?

any help is appreciated as i'm due for a service next month & at the moment i'm thinking of just going back to the GTX, but wasn't sure if there was more to it than just the numbers or it being synthetic etc.

The GTX is thicker at cold.

Don't use full synthetic, it's not worth it. Semi synthetic or mineral in a 15w

It needs to be a 15w40 oil and if you use a miniral oil you are more likely to do regular oil changes because it's so cheap

I dont like full synth at all
I think as long as you change regularly and keep it on the full line theres nothing wrong with cheap oil.

was hoping maybe a 10w-30 or similar might've been the remedy, but like dictator said it requires 10/15w-40 in the manual.

going to go with a mineral oil, leaning toward castrol magnatec, have always ran it in our other cars & have never had any issues, so might as well try it in the jimny.

i grabbed the magnatec & on the way out after i'd paid one of my mates at autopro came over & said castrol's sh!t now as it's been taken over by BP. i can't win lol.

I can't imagine castrol changing their recipe's with a rebrand.

Were you using exactly the same brand/ model oil filter with both oils?

When I had my XL-7 I noticed Ryco sold two different design oil filters under the same part number . One design made the timing chain rattle a lot more prevalent. I stopped using Ryco's "lucky dip" and changed oil filter brands... I notice since then they've updated their oil filter part number recommendations and a totally different filter is now listed!?

no, first time i was using the regular Z418 ryco filter, but when i did the next change the regular filter wasn't available so i had to get the performance/platinum version of the same filter that cost twice as much (still a ryco).

It's possible that could be part of the problem. Try a genuine Suzuki filter next time- they were only around $13 for my XL-7 (cheaper than Ryco's at a lot of stores.)

didn't know suzuki made their own, have already purchased a regular Z418 ryco though, hopefully all is good again when i get a chance to drop the oil.
