my be using my heart more than my brain here, but completely stock SJ410 soft top has come up, $650, has minimal rust that i could see, F10A motor, 4 speed box, leaf springs & i think disc brakes. thing is i don't know much if anything about them :?

can any one shed some light on the ins & outs of these cars as far as being able to mod (particularly in regard to gearing for larger tyres) ?

i've read a bit on here, mainly from gwagensteve about the differences in parts between 413 to 410, but more looking at parts interchangeability to upgrade it.

thanks.

Pre 11/84 1l is pretty much is own unique thing, has different interior, a few body differences, completely different mechanicals ect. 11/84 onwards is basically an SJ50 with 1l mechanicals.

If it's factory disc brake then it's got the light switch transfer which takes aftermarket gears.

Coz the standard transfer is pretty low geared (1.58) the aftermarket gears don't lower your high range that much. You have the option of LJ80 diff gears (4.556) or LJ50 (4.88) which are pretty much worthless but could be a bit difficult to find. There's also 5.12 gears from a Super Carry and 5.38s from JA71 rear if you really like searching for rocking horse poop.

The diffs are pretty strong, Steve ran 34s and didn't kill the gears, Highway/tanshi/wayne ran them for ages too. There's few off the shelf locker bits for them. Lockrite used to (might still?) sell lockrights, APIO sell spools, amusingly Suzuki still sell the important bits for the factory lockers and there's a few German mobs that sell upgraded factory locker bits too. The front CVs are Jimny size but 1.3l NT CVs/axles drop right in. Alternatively, 1.3l diffs are easy to fit but the diff ratios are a bit shit.

Suspension, steering, fuel tank ect is all the same as 1.3s.

You can build a 5 speed out of the later model 4 speed 'boxes. My 1l performed really well, stock it'd do 110 up any hill but it was revving to almost 6000rpm. Bloody loud. The 11/84 onwards models actually have 1.3l engine mounts and the "big case" gearbox so a G series motor is a bolt in conversion. Earlier ones need engine and gearbox mounts moved.

Type 1 is the earliest model. Steel dash, it had drums all round and the non-switch transfer. Amusingly these are around 90kgs lighter than an SJ70.

Type 2 came out 9/83 and brought discs and the switched transfer but otherwise was pretty much the same vehicle.

Type 3 came out in 11/84 with the 1.3l NT. Basically all of these are 1987 model, Suzuki must have brought a shitload of them in then. These shared the body with a 1.3l NT (so plastic dash) aside from having no brake booster, but unlike the earlier models you can quite easily retrofit one.

thanks for taking the time to school me on that !

i might just him & find out what month & year is on the build plate, it definitely has a plastic dash so it's a later one (& i'm sure it has front discs but i didn't pay enough attention).

he's actually the guy i bought the LJ20 from & am buying an LJ50v wreck from, so will have a spare set of LJ50 diffs. i'm no good with ratios, but with standard transfer & gearbox, what size tyre do you think i'd sensibly turn with the LJ50 centres fitted ?

The smallest standard tyre is an FR78 which is 27.4". With 4.88s your gearing would be good for a 32" tyre but your low range would be a bit shit at 38:1 crawl. With 4.88s and 4.16s in the transfer you get a 63.7 crawl ratio.

6.5s are only 7.1% lower geared in high but I'd happily run 30s or 31s on them if it's a healthy 1l.

the car's got over 200,000ks on it, so guessing the 1 litre would be getting tired.

at $1,500 i've totally shied away from it though, at $650 i didn't think it'd have hurt it just sitting in the shed waiting for me to get to it.

intention would've been to do an engine rebuild, body off chassis & turn into something i'd literally only register for the warmer months. at the money he now wants though i think i'm better off just focusing on my LJ50, but i'm sure i'll be getting a leafy sierra at some point in time & all of what you've shared above will be valuable in helping with sifting through cars as they come up.

Fair enough, as someone who has 3 project Suzukis I think it's way better to have 1 project (so only one money/time sinkhole) and one decent vehicle so you can still get out there and enjoy the world. :)

$1500 is very, very cheap for a running type 3 1.0 litre.
