What are peoples thoughts on a mini spool? Have a mate that wants to fit one to his 1.3 sierra

They're excellent, so long as you buy a trail tough one and understand how they effect handling. My car has been mini spooled in the rear for years.

Don't ever put one in the front.

31zook runs spools front and rear and loves them, I almost spooled the rear of mine after killing the air locker. Depending what state your in (NSW) you may have problems when pink slip time comes around.

Spools are good! I don't agree with "don't put spool or auto in the front" any more. I have auto front and a good mate of mine is spooled in the front and they drive fine. I do however like the air locked rear as 70% of the driving in mine is 2wd and it's nice to do tight turns without the wheels chirping.

Again this is just my opinion, everyone has had diffrent experiences with auto, spool, air locker setups and I do run power steering. Once my auto fails in the front it will be a spool, I'm not paying $1500 for another air locker that a slight breeze can't break.

Nice! The problem with an air locker in the rear is that a $30 axel can and will total the locker if your unlucky! A spool is a lot cheaper to replace so I'd say good move!

As for the front a lot of people swear by air lockers, my advice is to find a few mates who have both setups and see if they will let you have a good drive! It's always mixed reviews from people and you need to find what you are comfortable with. I love my auto in the front, how ever I run chromos and power steering which is most likely the reason I don't notice it. some of they guys I go with have auto f&r spools f&r or air lockers f&r and you will get mixed opinions again it's what your happy with. I only bring the front up because once you get the rear in and drive it a bit, you will be thinking about the front haha!

I think Steve mentioned in another thread we were discussing this topic he didn't like auto/spooled front because of the terrain he drives and didn't like how the car felt with it in general. I'm in a totally diffrent area with totally diffrent terrain. So keep these points in mind. What works for me might be a real shit fight for you and so on. If you do lock the front I would strongly recommend stronger axels and cv's.
