They'll make near on 500,000kms! But the reality is, most people never look after them properly to get that out of them. I got rid of my 2003 with 248,000kms and still ran extremely well. But I always dropped the oil every 5000kms and had no timing chain rattle.
Biggest issue with these motors is the timing chain/guides and oil leaks.

How long you can get out of a motor now will be entirely dependent on how it was treated before you got it. Taxis get high kms out of their motors because they almost never cold start them.

The total value of a mid to high KM Grand Vitara would probably be less than the cost of an engine rebuild making it somewhat uneconomical to do.

Lots of truth here.

This is just the reality of car ownership. If the whole car is worth $4K, the amount any sane person will spend on a rebuild will be significantly less than this, because lets be honest, if the engine is worn out, most of the rest of the car isn't far behind.

I imagine a proper rebuild on a 2.5 GV is relatively speaking, stupid expensive. There's lots of moving parts in that engine.

Yes ain't that the truth, you can see why they also cost alot to have work done on them. When I pulled mine out to do the rear main and fix up all the other leaks you soon find out how much has to be pulled apart even to do small things. Worst experience I've had working on an engine when it has had to be removed from car.

My 2.7 2002 xl7 is at 355000. I get a valve tick on start up for about 10 seconds about 7500k after each service. Works like a timer to tell me it's due again.
