Hello,
Quick question.
I already have a set of wheels with BFGs 215/75 muddies but they slow down the little Jimny a bit too much on steep hills compared to the OME tyres (now defunct)
I was thinking of investing in another set of wheels with smaller size tyres for day to day commuting while changing over to the KM2 tyres for weekend fun.
I would appreciate if anyone could advise what would be the smallest size tyre that I can run on R15 stock rims and not get in trouble. I read somewhere that the Jimny runs well with the 165/50 R15 mags and tyres from Mini Cooper. Would that be too small, any suggestions?
Thank you!

Just run stock tyres. Going smaller will be a pain- speedo will read wrong, road revs will increase etc.

This! OEM 205/70-15 with HT light truck tires will do the trick, you really dont want to drastically undersize tyre

Close alternative if they happen to be cheaper is 195/75-15 , 10mm slightly narrower about same diameter
(195/70-15 will improve your acceleration a bit speedo will read 2.3% faster)

but its usually cheaper to get OEM wheel+tyres from jimny owners who inevitably are upgrading

Auto... good idea to update your location so people can help you with parts... eg.. I have a stock set of wheels you may be interested in but for all I know you could be in Broome...

My honest suggestion would be to just drop down a gear and give it some more right foot. I drive a 98 Jimny with Muddies in the 215/75 size and it isn't that much of a hinderance. I would then use that $200 (or whatever it may be) towards fuel to wheel the damned thing!

More like dropping 2 gears. Going up the mountain (12% incline) requires dropping into the 2nd and rolling with 25-30km/h. Can't push too much because once or twice the car (gearbox?) smelt funny when I got at the destination. Took the car to dyno and $250 later they tell me there's nothing wrong with it, the power output is within specs. Must be the combination of 1.3, auto transmission and the bigger tyres and the steep incline.
Can't do much about the engine, for gearbox I am about to order some Redline oil hoping it will prevent cooking the gears plus I will drop a tyre size and see if that reduces the frustration of those driving behind me.
I might use the OME wheels with the 195/70 tyres and purchase some -30 offset rims from jimnybits.uk for the BFG muddies, strictly for weekend fun.
Thanks for all your replies!

+1

It's lowered the cruise by 195 rpm, just hit the OD off button when needed.

And a transmission temp gauge. Running for prolonged periods at highway speeds in 4th/unlocked and 3rd increases transmission heat markedly. No jimny should be being driven anywhere on 215's without a transmission temperature gauge.

When you do the transmission oil change, as above consider adding a transmission temp gauge, and the biggest cooler you can fit.

The ~$200 or so on a transmission cooler and temp gauge are probably the best mods you can do to an auto jimny

That's some good tips. Thanks for that.
Would anybody be able to direct me to a competent mechanic in Gold Coast / SE Qld area who can do this for me? My mechanical skills are pretty basic.
Cheers!

The guy there Nick, he used to repair/look my Jimny when I used to live on the Gold Coast, and recently fixed my rear diff. Hes been working with zooks all his life and knows the cars up adn down. He used to have a pretty col sierra at some point.

Im on the Sunny Coast, but I got a set of 5 factory jimny steel wheels if you want them. (I travel every now and then to the GC to visit friends)
