The law is to do with power to weight I think and a 1.6 , even in a light Sierra, is not that powerful. You can drive a WRX on ps in QLD as long as it is 2001 + model. All you need is a letter from Subaru stating the kerb weight and kwts at the fly wheel. Earlier models are too light and not legal to drive on Ps.. |

Yeah but regardless of how powerful a car is, you're not allowed any "engine modifications" on your p's. So I think the simple answer is no  because you need a mod plate to do a G16B conversion properly, and I'm pretty sure you can't drive anything with those sorts of mods on your p's (legally)

If you didn't mod plate the 1.6, had a quiet exhaust on it and drove it sensibly, I don't think anybody is going to ask you to open the bonnet.. You could probably get away with it. I've never been asked to open the bonnet on either of mine. They've both had extractors and full exhaust systems on them. Just depends wether or not you want to risk it. If I could go back and go it again I would have done the G16B while I was on my p's instead of spending the same amount of money getting the 1.3 rebuilt. |

These threads frustrate me. The same sort of thing pops up on FB all the time. There is only one answer. No, you can't legally drive a 1.6 engined Sierra on your P's in QLD and quite a few other states. You can drive it illegally, of course. It's like asking "can I drive at 150km/h?" Yes, of course you can, if you're willing to take the risk of detection and subsequent consequences. The consequences of detection don't change the law, they only change your perception of risk.
