Post subject:  engine stops on low revs... sometimes

Hi all, I'm driving a 93 vitara 5 door JLX sport 16v EFI and for the most part the car is running really well, however every so often when I come to a stop, the revs go down, and it's almost like they go too low, the check engine light flashes on and the engine just cuts out. it's then really hard to to get the car started again. I've taken it to the mechanics and they've fixed a few issues with the car as well as fault checked parts. (they actually got the zuk driving and sounding great) but the problem is still happening.

Could it just be that the rev settings are too low and need adjusting? how ever it does only happen sometimes at random. I'm just at a complete loss and any advice would be greatly appreciated

I've heard a faulty tacho can mess with the EFI and stall the car. can anyoe confirm this?

the ecu does not get a feed from the tacho to control fuel and timing so i would say no .

If the ecu has logged an error you can bridge the diagnostic port in the engine bay to see what error it has logged. you can find the information here http://codes.rennacs.com/Petrol-Engine/ ... ngines.php .

Before i waffle on about what it could be best to check the error codes. also a good idea to carry a spark plug socket with you so next time it happens and you crank and crank and it doesnt start you can pull a spark plug and see if it is wet or dry , this will give an indication whether it is looking for fuel or overfuelling or a spark issue. if it is dry its looking for fuel if its wet its overfuelling or a spark issue. have you tried holding the throttle flat to the floor when it stops and hard to start ?

get back with the results and we may be able to help.

I believe this is typical of sticking EGR valves - engine on the overrun the EGR valve opens, as the vehicle stops it should close and doesn't. or takes a little longer than it should, and the engine is filling the cylinders with exhaust fumes rather than fresh air.

What I don't know is if the Australian market Vitara would have had EGR fitted in 93.

thanks for the replies, I've had it into the mechanices and they tell me that its not showing any code. they've check/replaced everything to do with idle control and air intake (charged me a bit too) but while it runs better i still feel like they haven't fixed the problem.

I've head the EGR valve could do this too, could anyone tell me how to check it please?

simple way would be just to remove the vacuum hose to the egr , block the vacuum hose and drive it around.
