Post subject:  Jimmy 1999 Gearbox leak

Ok so I'm new to Jimmy owner ship and recently bought one off of my brother. The other day I decided to replace the gearbox oil (diff's were done a month back) I filled it till it came out which I thought was the right thing to do....?? But I went on a 3 hour drive and when I got to my destination there was oil literally covered all over the under body of my car. I then dumped it to see how much I had lost and only about 900ml came out so my guess is I lost about 400-500ml of oil somewhere... it seems to be coming from where my gearbox attaches to the engine but am unsure. Will post photos. So I'm not driving till I get this fixed. I did top it up and drive home and then more oil under my car...
Also twice coming back it almost felt like motor went under intense load for half a second then be fine again...any thoughts on that would be great aswell!

Thanks

Pull the gearbox out and replace the seal.
While there, i would probably do a rear main seal too, and inspect the clutch.

It's not hugely technical, just a pain in the arse.

Was it noisey?

It could have been a gear failure, with something jamming occassionally which may explain the intermittent intense load.
My sierra did as the transfer gears ate themselves on the highway, it was noisey as hell once i slowed down.

Is this do able without a hoist? It's got a 3 inch lift and 31"s so it is fairly high. Is there a topic on this website with a step by step instruction?

It wasnt too noisy...about the usual noise from that region...would be a good idea to replace the oil in the transfer? Which is the same oil as the gearbox isn't it?

Thanks

I'm not sure how to post a photo but there's a cap on the side of the gearbox which I can see my clutch and there is gearbox oil in there...I don't know about you but I don't think that should be in there...??

It shouldn't, the problem is most likely a leaking seal, which is why jdk81 told you to pull the gearbox and change it.

I wrote another response but got sidetracked.

Change the oil in the transfer if you wish.

You should be right for space, but a set of ramps may make life easier.

Based on a sierra but, I would just remove stuff that may be in the way.
Disconnect the battery, remove the starter motor.
Pull the front driveshaft out, remove the jackshaft, remove the exhaust if its in the way.
Remove the gear stick, and undo the clutch cable.

When the gearbox is out, pry the seal out and tap a new one in.

A sierra FSM should have the relevant torque etc for the bolts.

In the bottom I linked my google drive with some FSM that may be helpful.

Consider doing the rear main on the engine and check the clutch while you're in there.
The hardest part is centering the clutch when the motor is in the car, but you can make a clutch alignment tool pretty easily.

Hopefully it's just the seal
