Hi All

My son recently bought a sierra witha G16B conversion already done. It wouldnt start and run properly when we got (wiring problems, it was cheap) so couldnt test it properly.

Now I've got it running it's quite the dog on the road. I expected it to be fairly peppy with that engine.

It's got 31" tires with I think stock diffs.

Would love to hear how these normally turn out and what it should go like.

cheers

It's impossible to know what your expectations are or how the car is actually running, but without correcting the gearing the car won't be driving properly.

A g16b in a baleno is a good motor in a compact car, but it's no powerhouse.
The car will exceed the speed limit up hill, and the a/c will work, but you need to drop down a gear and keep the revs high and it will power up the hill.

A g16b in a vit is borderline.

Compared to the stock sierra motor, a g16b is much better, but it's not great. It'll get up and go, but nothing like the baleno it came from, or other small car.
The aerodynamics suck and with 31" tyres your gearing sucks and the motor will be labouring.

Correct the gearing and see how it is. Don't expect miracles, if you haven't driven a baleno, vit, or sierra, it's hard to know what to expect.

BTW a sierra at speed can be pretty scary.

correct the gearing for tyres. it wont be fast but will make a difference.

in my opinion g16b is great in a sierra. not a race car but heaps for what the car are.

Thanks Guys.

I didn't expect to beast HSV commodoes, but I did expect a free revving and willing little engine. I guess I was expecting it to drive like a zippy hatch back.

So, it seems the gearing is the issue.

To Be honest I used to have a 1.0L LWB and that seemed to run better than this thing. Just wondering what I should be aiming for.

FYI, The Sierra has about 7" lift made up of tires, dobinson suspension and 2" body lift, and is like driving a seesaw. I think a long trip would have me getting pretty car sick.

cheers

you have 31s which raise the car 2.5 inches

2 inches of body lift only raises the body so is actually not too bad for raising weight as it leaves the engine, gearbox etc at the same height.

what spring lift do you have, you might find your springs are too stiff, this will cause the seesawing front to back your describing.

it could be that your 1.3 isnt tuned well or what ever, but without correcting gearing you wont know.

you have changed the gearing about 17% with 31s but haven't corrected it at all so you will probably be about 17% worse off in performance.

ie alot.

I figured 50% more power would have it zipping around all over the place. I guess with the stock tires it would be like I expected.

I'm going to get it tuned and see if that helps. I suspect it isnt running optimally.

Fix the gearing.

A baleno with a g16b running like shit still drives better than a sierra with a good g16b.

I can light up a pair of 32"s on the road with ease
4.1 diffs, 6.5 transfer reduction, baleno 1.6
Well at least until my transfer explodes
Quicker than td dmax, hilux, colorado on road as well

My uncle used to have a stock sierra with g16 in it and it went like a shower of shit compared to mine on 31s with 5.14s... it also tore your face off with stock brakes by comparison to stopping the 31s... The tyres & lift make an enormous difference regardless of gearing. His stocker was scary fast!

My 1.6 Baleno engine runs really really well, revs freely all the way to limiter if I want it to (has extractors, 2" exhaust and a snorkel if you believe they would make a difference :P)
But in a lifted coily with a 2.1mm steel checker-plate cab floor, bullbar / rear seats / rollbar, steel sunrasia spare with a 31" tyre on it with 30" muds and stock gearing, It's really not much faster then my previous 1.3l in my last coily used to be.
Although it's better up hills and has more torque in sand and at higher speeds when aerodynamics are working against me. But I know if I had the correct gearing and my car wasn't full of heavy stuff there would be a huge difference over a G13ba. I have a mate with exactly the same setup as me only he has a leafy with the correct gearing and doesn't have a steel floor (or back seats) and his car chirps into 2nd and noticeably pulls away from mine if he's going for it.
depends on the car i guess but in any case, a g16b should always have more get up and go then a g13ba.

^^ All that being said, I've driven a bog stock 1.6l Baleno and it was worlds quicker then any 1.6l sierra I've ever seen...
