I was reading about the V6's having trouble with the rear main crank seal getting chewed by sand ingress, does the 2L motor have the same problems? Are the automatics enclosed properly?
Thanks

2L v6 (h20a) or the J20a?

I think all engines have a particular dislike for sand getting anywhere near the rear main though.

GV 2l so J20a.

The bellhousing for the manual box has two rearward facing vents at the top, one at the bottom rear and a small drain/vent at the bottom in the mating surface.
Sand can also ingress into the belhousing through a worn clutch fork boot and possibly around the starter motor.
Mud is usually the big killer but obviously anything abrasive near a moving seal is going to wear it quickly.

I suspect Sand killed the gear box seal on my SQ625 as can be seen in the picture above. There was a little pool of sand near the bottom of the bell housing. I guess that will be a risk for any manual box though when off roading.
