Compressor in question, Thumper MkII https://www.4wdsupacentre.com.au/produc ... r-bag.html Car in question, Grand Vitara. Cigarette plugsx3 12V @ 120W My electronic knowledge is limited. I'm comfortable doing physical simple wiring so long as I have instructions to follow. 1. Can I convert from crocodile clips to cigarette plug without any issues? Just get the polarity right? Are any additional parts needed? In line fuse (size?), in car switch. (I would do this myself) 2. Can I hard wire the compressor? Are any additional parts needed? In line fuse (size?), in car switch. (I would get a sparky friend to install) 3. Could this compressor be used to run an air locker in future? Are any additional parts needed (apart from those that come with the locker)? In line fuse (size?), in car switch, reservoir tank? |

a) Your cig plug wiring will not be sufficient enough for the amps required for the compressor. Most cig plug circuits are 10a max (which yours definitely are, hence the 120w) and your compressor has a 45a draw according to their own specs. b) Yes. You will need some basic additional parts but any self-respecting sparky mate should have those at the ready anyway. Just get a switch of your choice, I suppose. c) Yes it could, but you will need at the very least a pressure switch and possibly a small tank but it'll run a locker without one. |

A tip with a 45amp draw, is to have the engine running when the pump is running, so low voltage doesn't damage the pump & you don't flatten the cranking battery enough to not be able to start the car. You could run 6mm squared (minimum) wire into a 50amp Anderson plug on the grill (for instance) via a 50amp maxi or midi fuse, 'interrupt' the pump wiring with another 2 Anderson plugs, so you didn't need to pop the bonnet but still use the pump on a car that doesn't have an Anderson plug fitted. If doing options 2) or 3), run the fused 6mm sq wire via an ignition switched relay (40amp is a common size & should just be big enough), means pump won't run until ign. is on (& car should be running). Pumps are noisy things, but will last a bit longer if not in the muck of the engine bay. Bolted to the top of a rear wheel arch is common. Rgs, Michael Rgs, Michael |
