So I am busy prepping for the Alternator upgrade and doing lots of other maintenance tasks on the my new 1985 Drover (timing belt, filters, water pump etc). The battery is looking pretty tired and must be well overdue for replacement - especially as we are going to hammer it hard with the spotlight.

The factory spec calls for an NS40 size and I think that's what is installed. Looks to be a room in the bay for a slightly bigger battery though - what's the largest size that can be fitted in there does anyone know? Don't mind a bit of work to make it fit but not trying to shoehorn an N70 in there either

I had a N50 in the stock location. Can't recall if anything had to be modified though.

D51 Optima is the preferred battery, and the largest that fits in the stock position.

238x129x229mm

Plenty of battery for any use.

So I can report that the Century 58MF series fits nicely! need to adjust the bottom bracket slightly but its a 2 minute job with a cordless screwdriver. The 58 size is 540CCA so is considerably bigger than the anemic 40 series they come fitted with. For a farm basher I couldn't justify the $300+ for an Optima when the heavy duty version of this is on special at Super Cheap Auto for $131!
