Hey All,

2012 GV SBW AT Tyre / Wheel Help

Nice to e-meet you all, I'm new to 4x4 and have just got a weekender that currently is fitted with Street Tyres.
Im keen to get a new set to do some weekend off road adventures in.

We got a 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara SBW 3 Door

Im not really sure what to start with and what sizes are legal / suitable for the car.
Ideally i'd get Sunraysia rims and rubber on a seperate set and store the current ones.

I've seen lots of people with BT Goodrich All-Terrain's which look nice,
Some in 17" some in 16" i guess I'm just after a bit of guidance

I've seen a few posts with

225/75/16"
245/70/17"

What would be best to look at?

Personaly I don't see much need. Appart from getting nicks I get around on street tyres, sand, some rock and mud. Not the best but when you weight up the amount of k's on road vs off, not worth it for me. I'll just be getting something with good cut resustance next time.

However if your looking at a second set to put on specifically for 4wd then swapping back for road and have the cash to splash great. I'd be looking at 15'' if you can find some to fit your model. There is a better tyre range in 15's.

I seriously doubt that you will find a 15" rim that will clear the brakes on any of the newer Grand Vitaras.

Krezlic - I think a good place to start would be to tell us what size tires are currently fitted - the new GVs come with 16, 17, and I believe 18" rims - also did yours come with a spare (not all of them do) and what size is that - my GV came with 17" OEM alloys for the road wheels and a 16" steel for the spare.

Currently the car has alloy 16" rims and is fitted with some cheep no names by the previous owner, the profile is 225/70/R16.
I've seen a few people have gone all the way to 245/70/R17' but I'm not sure how practical that is i assume you get a lift from the new profile however risk it being to big and illegal?

Changing back and forth between sets of tyres can end up being a pain in the butt. Do you have somewhere to store them. Depending on where you drive offroad and how many road Ks you do, maybe just run some ATs all the time.

Sunraysia is a brand name, there are also very good steel rims made by Dynamic and others and don't discount alloys if you get some for a good price.

If you want tyres for just offroading get the biggest you can - 245/75/16 (same as 245/70/17 but I'd stick with 16s if getting a spare set), you want as much ground clearance as you can get. Also look at getting an Ironman bash plate. And if it's just for offroad, don't worry about ATs and get some mud terrains like BF Goodrich KM2, Mickey Thompson also do an aggressive AT called the ATZ P3. Cheaper tyres with a good rep are Federal Couragia MTs or Kanati Trail Hog (almost half what a Mickey costs). Buy an ARB tyre deflator too, makes things much easier offroad, think I ended up running 18 - 20 psi in my lwb diesel.

Thanks so much for the advice.

I managed to get some ST Maxx Coopers 225/75/R16's and put them on the standard metal rims that the suzuki came with.
