With the hunting buggy build I am currently looking at Disconnecting the vehicles driving lights and just using a combination of light bars to the front and sides. What is the maximum amps I can safely use of the alternator without running into troubles, the vehicle will be used for long hours at night spotlighting. Cheers |

Pretty sure the alternator can put out 70amp but I have read that the late model ones are 85A. It depends how crazy you want to go but that should cover it easily. If you're buying eBay lightbars the actual wattage will likely be a fraction of what they're advertised at and comparable or less than an equivalent brand name bar. Figure 40-100w for a 20". |

True regarding the cheap light bars. I might buy the first one and test it, then add them slowly. |

Light bars aren't going to be used for spotlighting? Too much light / brightness might give the critters you hunt too much notice? You can fairly easily 'outrun' the useful range of a light bar/s at speed, but that doesn't sound like where your buggy is at. If the engine is running, then you are unlikely need / want to fit enough LED lighting to trouble it. 100W / 14V = just over 7amps. A couple like that on the front & 50W to either side & the rear in flood patterns should be ample & about 25amps = easy done. If the car is not running, then that sort of load would give you an hour or so (as long as the battery is in good cond.) before starting the car could be a problem. Rgs, Michael |
